I have friends who applied 10 weeks ago, were told 6 weeks to get them, they still don't have them & had to cancel a Mexico vacation. Now they are being told it could be 6 months!! They are a family of 5.

My husband applied for his passport late 2006 and received it in about four weeks. My daughter and I applied mid-January, 2007, and received ours in about seven weeks. We applied at our local post office and did not pay any extra fee. A friend of my daughter applied about a month ago and did pay for expedited service. He received his in four days.

The only countries we visit are Canada and Mexico so we have always used our birth certificates and drivers licenses. My husband never had a problem until he started using his passport. He has a common Scandanavian name and is now on some list. The first time he used the passport, they questioned him at the ticket counter. While we were on the plane waiting to take off, a couple of people came onto the plane and checked his passport again. When we left Cancun they made a copy of his passport. When we went to Mexico in April, he was questioned again. When we got back, the customs agent asked him if he had ever lost or had his passport stolen.

The easiest way is to apply at your local post office assuming it has a passport agent. If it does, you can do everything right there. You can get the applications on-line and fill them out on your computer. Below is a link that has all of the info you need.

                Date received? 7/13/07
Weeks to get passport(s)? 1 week
Did you pay extra to expedit it or them? Yes
Did you have to get anyone to help get your passport(s), if so, whom did you
                have help? No
Did you miss a trip because you didn't get your passport(s) in time? No
Is your new passport(s) the old style or the new style with the 'chip' in it? I don't know, how do I tell?
Where was your passport(s) issued from? Again, I don't know the answer to this. The passport doesn't specify which office it was issued from

                The cost was $127 + $30 fee = Total $157

It took one week to get this in the mail! I couldn't believe how fast this was processed. This is my husband's passport - which he paid extra to get it expedited. I applied for my passport about a month ago (no extra fee) and I'm still waiting....

Daughter number 2 applied on March 22, for spouse and two children. Spouse got his on August 2, son on August 3 (renewal, but still a child) and daughter has come yet. Regular service via local post office. The two so far are the new type Passports.

Daughters passport came on Monday, August 5, 2007.

Wow...that may be a world record (rather, USA record). Did you apply for that one in person at your post office, did you mail in your app and check, what exactly? Was it a new one or a renewal?

Mine just expired, I noticed, on July 23. I should probably renew asap in case I want to go to Mexico again this winter. So, for a *renewal* which would be faster, to go to post office to apply, to do it via mail, or...go to my Congressman's office during his recess and twist his arm to expedite for me?

Carol--I agree with you on this. I couldn't believe how quickly my husband's passport was processed! It was not a renewal, it was a new passport. My husband applied in person at a Passport Acceptance Facility, which happened to be the local courthouse. He did pay the extra fee to expedite it (at the suggestion of the clerk), but he did not pay the extra fee for overnight delivery.

What's ironic is that a couple of weeks after my husband received his passport, he received a notice in the mail that his application had been received and was being processed! I keep thinking they're going to call him one day and ask for it back.

Wife and I applied June 4, 2007 and just received them both on the same day this last week. Took a total of 12.5 weeks. Not sure where the chip might be, but it's a very patriotic theme. We don't have any plans to use it yet. We didn't pay any extra fees and don't know where it was processed out of once we dropped it off at the local county clerks office in California. We had been advised 10-12 weeks when submitted.

Daughter and future son-in-law applied at the same time. He choose to expidite his and received it in 2 weeks. She went the normal route and recieved hers in 12 weeks. Both had their passports in hand shortly before their cruise. Our daughter choose not to expidite when they changed the rules to only needing BC, photo ID and proof she had applied for her passport.
