Airline status comps

I can probably dig out this info at flyertalk.com when I get the time, but maybe somebody here can give me the Cliff notes version. Carolinian mentioned a status comp between airlines in another thread and got me to wondering.

I don't fly often at all any more and have lost any status I ever had with the airlines, but I learned about the AA challenge and am now gold just through February. Most of my miles are on Delta and I also have some very old ones on USAir.

Is there any way to get existing ff accounts upgraded on a status comp? Sounds pretty hopeless, particularly when I won't be flying anytime soon. The only trip I had coming up in August got cancelled, so it's strictly on the ground in the foreseeable future.

Just thought I'd ask.

Sheila, I know that UA & US will comp you. Don't know about Delta. Usually you need to have some flights already booked to show that you are going to fly the airline in the near future. Frankly, I wouldn't waste a one time comp that will only last through February if you don't know if you are going to fly the airline. You might need it later.

BTW, watch you don't lose those US miles. They now expire in 18 months.

An airline will only comp you once, so it will waste that one time shot if you don't plan to take advantage of it by flying.

Thanks for the reminder on the US miles. I had a moment of panic earlier today when I noticed my spreadsheet says that my US miles expire mid-2007. That was based on my last flight, but I had a hotel stay in Feb of this year that should have extended the date. I haven't found a place on their website that shows the date like Delta does.
