  • I need 1,400 AA FF Miles fast.

I have a flight on hold until Oct 8 but I am short 1,400 miles. I could buy them or borrow from my wife. Is there some other way that I can get that many miles posted in a few days? The cost to buy is about $85 total.
Edited to add, The cost to borrow 2,000 miles from my wife or Son is $50 total.

Sorry, Frank. I thought I had some old miles from AA, but I just called and my balance is zero. I would gladly have given them to you--I think my old ones must have expired....

      Frank,

I have 2600 miles expiring in December; if you want them they're yours. Just let me know what I need to do.

Joy if you are not going to use them , then yes I can Thank you. I would need your log in and password so I can use my Credit card to pay the $50 charge. I can only take 2000 which is what I need. The good part for you is you will get 18 months remaining to do something with the remaining 600. If you rather I gave you my FF # and password with Credit card # I can do that if you prefer.

I just looked again and saw there is a $30 transaction fee. So the total cost to transfer 2000 miles is $80.

Geez, they really get ya' don't they! I guess if it's an expensive ticket it's worth it, but if it's something you can get cheap it really does make one think.

Frank, I will ask my So to look up our accounts and email you. He should be back soon and I will email you later. I know that he commented that he was going to lose miles in the smaller account and I believe that it was his.

Some airlines let you donate it to charity but he told me that it didn't seem to be an option here.

Do you know anyone with a Starwood rewards account? Those miles transfer with a 1:1 ratio to American Airlines, as well as many others, (and, if you transfer 20,000 at a time, Starwood will throw in an additional 5,000 just for fun). You can read more at spg.com.

I would have sent the miles you needed if you didn't already have it covered. There wouldn't have been any fees involved from SPG's side of it, and I don't think there would have been any from AA's side, but since I haven't yet transferred any of my accumulated Starpoints yet, I'm not positive. I really doubt it would cost anything, though. Also, I believe they transfer within 24 hours.

This is good to know for the future. It cost me $80 for the 2000 miles I transfered and it can take up to a week to transfer over. I wish Amex was in with AA and United and a few others. that whould make things easy.

Starwoods rewards with its American Express card is a good program. It's highly praised at Flyer Talk (which is why I went with it in the first place). It's $35 a year, but the fee is waived the first year. Most airline-branded credit cards cost about $75 a year, and you're stuck with miles only for that airline, so this is a pretty good deal. I believe you can get 10,000 Starpoints when you apply for the card.

There are few programs that can transfer points to so many different airlines at a 1:1 ratio, making it much more flexible than accumulating all of your miles with one airline--where they might expire if they sit unused for too long. The added bonus of 5,000 additional points/miles when 20,000 are transferred to a specific airline is also a nice feature.

Here are the airlines Starwood transfers miles to and at what ratio:

Having said that, I've been trying to concentrate my miles in Citibank's Thank You Rewards program. I like the way award travel can be booked without blackout restrictions. It's been easy to accumulate miles using the one-year offer of 5x every dollar spent on fuel, up to 75,000 points in the year for the Citi Diamond Rewards card (there are a few other Citi cards that offer this). I also have the Citi Premier Pass Elite card, but all of the gas purchases go on the Diamond card until it's no longer giving me 5x my gas dollars (very easy to add up with big farm fuel bills).
