I've always found Rough Guide & Lonely Planet guides to be very good. Also used Moon Travel Handbooks but they don't seem to be as widely available. That may be different in the US.

Like Keith, I would recommend the Lonely Planet Books.

For very specific information try the Lonely Planet forum called The Thorn Tree.

I used the Lonely Planet guidebooks in Australia and Russia and they were great. Recommended!
