  • Priceline bidding - hotels

I posted this question on the Bidding for Travel site as well, but so far, no answers. So thought I'd try here. I'm trying to get a 3 or 4 start hotel in Portland. How safe do you think it would be if I add Hillsboro and Beaverton (which in Bidding for Travel show nothing higher than a 2 1/2 star)? I don't want to get something in an area that I don't really want, but I know I've read that you can re-bid sooner by adding zones that do not have hotels of the category you're looking for. TIA

Luanne, you can rebid tomorrow without risking it. Or you can rebid from another computer sometimes, you might try from home if you started at the office. Or, you can open hotmail accounts to your heart's content and set up new accounts for each of them. That said, I tend to trust BFT's advice, and if there aren't any three stars in those areas, you're probably safe.

I got the Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront for $70/night. The Marriott website is showing the lowest rate at $149, so I'm happy.

And, I was able to cancel my back up reservation at the Embassy Suites for $199/night. Ouch!

That's great, good for you! Did you add the other areas after all?

Me, too. I recently booked DH into SFO (Four Points by Sheraton) for $56. He's lucky, I put in the search for two stars but Priceline took better care of him than I intended

              WooHoo, that's terrific!

I have to start using priceline.

I looooove Priceline and I've gotten some great deals on hotels there. The Grand Hyatt in Chicago, the Renaissance Inner Harbor in Baltimore, the Hyatt near Union Station in D.C., the Sheraton Society Hill in Philly, all for about $70 per night.

The way Luanne did it is the way BetterBidding and BiddingforTravel advise, and that's how I have bid on Priceline in the past. You open a separate browser window to find areas that have no hotels at the star level you are bidding for. Then you know that each of those areas is a free rebid. If you're careful, you can do very well. And if you don't get the price you want, you can wait 24 hours (I think it's 24 hours) and try again.

One other tip: Before I go to Priceline, I go to Hotwire and see what the hotel prices look like there. With help from the two bidding sites, you can often figure out which hotels Hotwire is offering. Then when you go to Priceline, you have a better idea of what's available at what price. Good luck, and congrats, Luanne!

Yes, I did add the other areas.

Oh, and for a Christmas gift for dh I bought tickets for the SF Symphony and got one night at a boutique hotel on the Embarcadero. Sounds really nice.

And don't get too excited about your dh's hotel. The SFO hotel area is all pretty tacky, lol.

Well, at least it's by the airport. Seriously, though, that's where he needs to be for one night, and he would have been happy in a two star (clearly I am not joining him... ).

Your DH must have been very pleased, what a great gift - and you get to enjoy it with him

I just did my first hotel purchase through priceline yesterday and I have to say, I am not yet impressed. I bid on a three star hotel which I won. It turns out the hotel doesn't even have a pool or jacuzzi. For the three star rating i would have liked to at least have those very basic hotel ammenities. Now I'm stuck. Thank you priceline!

Where was the three-star hotel? You do have to be careful with Priceline, no question. If there are amenities that you must have, like a pool, then it's best to go with a regular hotel booking.

I only use Priceline for major cities, bidding on four-star hotels, occasionally on three-stars if I really need to be in a particular area. In areas where I need to pick and choose to find a nice hotel, I don't recommend Priceline.

For example, a couple of summers ago we needed to go to Lancaster, PA. Lots of one- and two-star hotels there, but I went with a traditional hotel booking because I didn't want Priceline to choose a two-star hotel for me--I was willing to pay more to choose my own!

Perhaps it's just my experience but 3* seems to be the level with the most variability on Priceline. I have found the 2 1/2* (Courtyards by Marriott for example) more to my liking than some rather tired 3* properties. Whatever * level I've tried have all been at least OK and at great rates thanks to biddingfortravel.

Just returned from Portland this weekend, my daughter has a one person show at the Beet Gallery all month(shameless plug by a proud father). I used priceline 4 star only. I had no problems with adding Hillsboro and Beaverton and ended with the Benson for $65 a night

Love The Benson!! Thanks to PL I've stayed there several times - for rates similar. That's probably about one-third the rate available via Orbitz or Travelocity.
