They are saying lots of folks are losing their luggage, I recently signed up for the luggage insurance with my American express. Don't remember what I paid but it was under 10 dollars. Check it out. Buff/Scott

Yes, Amex have various plans. We just changed from something like $7-50 per month, which would cover all travelers with airfare/airfare taxes (in case of a miles booking) charged to the Amex card, to something like $5-75 per person, whenever an airfare/airfare tax charge is made to the card.
The first option is great for frequent travellers, second option better for infrequent travellers. Also, on the second option, if you decide not to insure a person (i.e. kids with no luggage), you can simply call and have the charge reversed.
Our baggage were once delayed for several days and Amex paid out without any problems after we submitted the paperwork.

I saw something on the news about a sizeable increase in lost luggage, but the big increase was only for a few airlines.
