My wife, daughter and grandson are wanting to make a trip to Italy and Greece in the early summer of 2009. I think that they would do better with an organized tour to see Rome and Athens, etc. Any recommendation on good tour companies that they might check out?

Rick Steves books. We are leaving for France next week. His France and Paris book are sitting on my desk right now. Going to Ireland in June. That book is on my nightstand.
Have a great time. We stayed outside of Rome by the Ocean and took the train in each day.

You could also give consderation to a cruise. There a lot of great options for med. cruises now that are reasonably priced. The advantages are you get to see more places without unpacking and packing for each city and, you know everyone should be able to find something they'll eat along the way while still having plenty of opportunities to sample the local cuisine. The disadvantage is that it can be just a sampler platter as most destinations are done in a day. I almost needed another vaction to recover from the cruise when we were finished. It was a great way for us to see a lot of different places and decide which ones we would eventually like to return for a little more intimate visit. Our timeshare and other photo's at http://dougp26364.smugmug.com/

If your nervous about doing it on your own. Look at Untours, they set you up with housing, transporation, and some planning; but you do it on your own.
I don't know how long your going for, but this may be an option.
We done cruises and "on our owns" but it has always been with other couples.
I looked at this when we were going to do it by ourselves.
