But at least they are going to continue to fly and try to work through bankruptcy.

That is what Aloha said initially as well. We will see...

Rats! I have tickets on Airtran and, according to the reports I've been reading they're not far behind.

What's likely to happen is people will become scared to fly LLC's for fear their tickets will be worthless. At that point the legacy carriers will have all the leverage they need to run start up airlines out of the sky's and get their prices to the point of profitablity. In the end it will be good for the airlines as they're more likely to make a profit but bad for those of us the fly either for pleasure or business. This could have far reaching affects on the tourist and travel industry in the years to come.

Because this trip was an exchange, it's in S. Florida and it's at the end of hurricane season, I did take out the trip insurance with I.I. Now I'll have to go back and see if there is any coverage provided for the airline tickets in the event Airtran files for bankruptcy and quits flying before we get there. Looks as if I'm going to have to start looking at travel insurance to cover the additional cost associated with the unexpected expenses of buying airfare on short notice more so than coverage that just covers the loss of the ticket price on a bankrupt carrier.

Wouldn't it be absolutely dreadful if people who made a more risky buying a decision actually faced some added risk for having made that decision??
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

          “You shouldn't wear that body.”

If you find such insurance, please let me know! From the research I've done I only see flight delay of 5 or more hours, not kaput before flight. And some carriers are not covered at all due to their risk of failure.

My flights to Cabo are via Frontier.

When I made the reservation, I didn't know it was a risky one. I hadn't been paying attention to Frontier or Airtran's cash positions, thinking they were doing well. Not until the others started flying wheels up did I start seeing these two were in trouble.

Hopefully Frontier and Airtran are large enough to weather the storm (so to speak) where Aloha, ATA and Skybus were not. I had known for some time ATA was in trouble. It wasn't so long ago that a code share agreement with Southwest saved ATA. Skybus with it's extrememly cheap tickets didn't look to be around long. Aloha wasn't an airline I paid attention too.

In my mind I really thought that LCC's like Frontier, Airtran and Jetblue were in decent shape. Looks like I'd better start paying closer attention and reading the articles collected at Airwise - The Airport and Air Travel Guide again.
