We came THISCLOSE to getting bumped

I had a bump last month that netted me a $300 voucher and arrived the same time as originally planned, plus avoiding a potential weather problem in Memphis. I was booked Raliegh to Memphis to Detroit to London. I was getting concerned with weather reports of a bad ice storm that would be hitting Memphis just before I would arrive, and was concerned about getting back out to connect with my London flight. When I got to the airport, they were asking for bump volunteers for the Raleigh to Memphis flight. I asked if I could get on the direct flight to Detroit leaving about 15 minutes later, and they had space, so I volunteered.

We volunteered to be bumped on a Southwest flight from St. Louis to San Jose via LAX. It happened at LAX. We were given $400 in vouchers and a free lunch if we would take the next flight out. We jumped on it as the next flight out got us into San Jose only 45 minutes later than the original one. Not only that, we were flying on free SW tickets from our Rapid Rewards. They also let us board first during pre-boarding on the next flight.
