July will be a two day road trip:
Day one from Minneapolis to Rapid City SD. This is about an 8 hour drive.
Second part of trip from Rapid City to Big Sky Montana, also 8 hours.

Coming home will be the north end drive. A little shorter, with less to see and we are going to do it in one day. It is a 14 hour trip, but freeway and two drivers. This will be our longest single day drive.

Our normal drive is from Minneapolis to Wis. Dell to CMV. Other than that, we pretty much need to fly to get there.

We bought in Myrtle Beach because it was driveable (about 14 hours, which is pretty much our max). In a post -911 world, I did not want to need an airplane to go on vacation. It has worked out great. I have driven down and my DH has flown due to work. Other years, we have made the drive together. It takes a FULL day, but we often break it up by leaving on Friday afternoon and stopping along the way. Coming back, we generally just suck it up and plow through all the way home. I don't mind the drive, by our 6 year old always has the same response "We're DRIVING?!!?!?!" - such a life she leads....

      Cheers!

Drove up and down the East coast

I've driven from NY up to Nova Scotia and down to Florida. Usually don't do too much driving in one day, I try to break it up, too much sitting in the car. The Florida trip was mostly to see the sites along the way anyway so we were in no hurry to get to Florida. We were alos flying back home to save time. I don't normally drive my car anyway so it's a rental every time. Nova Scotia trip was round trip driving, but going we took our time, coming home we put the pedal to the metal. We normally take a 10 - 14 day trip when we drive. This is pre-timeshare days, in fact that Florida trip is when I bought my first timeshare, unfortunately didn't know about TS4M's or other websites regarding timeshares then, would have saved lots of money..oh well live and learn.

We're driving to Ruidoso, NM next month.... From Southeast of Houston. We'll spend the first night in West Texas.

We typically do one flying trip and 2 driving trips each year. Palm Springs and San Diego are 2 1/2 hours away (no traffic - so usually takes us 4 hours). We also drive to Sedona - about 7 hours. We'll probably do a big road trip in a few years when the youngest grows up a bit.

Next trip is over 900 miles. Planning an overnight stay each way. I can do 600 pretty easily in a day, 1200 plus to Florida is a bear. It makes my 400 mile plus trips to Maine seem easy.

You're going to my home state! Where in Maine will you be visiting?

Heck, 4 hours wouldn't even get us out of our own state!

We do a ~16 hour (1000 miles) trip every summer, but 11-12 hours is the max for one day for us. I really don't mind driving at all, so I end up doing 90-100% of the driving on any given trip. Our daughter has gotten really good at sleeping / reading / entertaining herself on these trips.

Yes we drive mostly. Hate to fly actually, have flown though to Hawaii, Rio de Janeiro, Greece, Paris all from Mass. Then have flown to Playa del Carmen from central Mexico ie: Guadalajara and also to Mass. For the driving used to drive in states 4-5 hours to timeshare. Here we drive up to 12 hours in a day...have driven from Guadalajara area to Ixtapa, Mazatlan, PV, NV, Manzanillo. Pv is only 5 hours so we do that often, anything up to 8 hours is great with us! We leave real early, like 4am....and we're off bringing whatever we wish with no restrictions. Love driving!

We also drive. Easier to travel that way with a preschool child.

We prefer driving for the following reasons:

We can visit places on the way.
We can take along more stuff, including a cooler that runs in the car
Even with the price of gas so high, it is still less expensive than airfare
Since 9/11, flying is not as much fun as it used to be
We can save our money for trips that require airfare, e.g. Hawaii

Generally, if we can drive in 1-2 days, we drive. If it takes longer than that, we fly.

                            Drive, Fly, Ship

We've done it all at one time or another. We do mostly drive to because we like being able to bring ice chests, pillows, other supplies.
Usually 10 hours of driving a day is our limit and we add extra time to vacations so the driving time doesn't dig into relaxing time. We also go at our pace and don't try rushing. We have found that we like starting a long drive very early (4-5am), stopping off for a hearty breakfast after driving about half way. We also stop at rest stops to strech and bathroom breaks.
We have done this for years and both our kids learned to sleep and read while moving along and both of them love to travel.
This year we have 4 trips planned, 1 flight to Yellowstone and 3 drive to trips.
Even better now though because 3 of us will drive.
                            Bart
I live to vacation and vacation to live.

                              Where we drive...

DH doesn't like to fly even if it's the 2 of us (which doesn't happen too often with 5 sons!). And airfare is expensive from Duluth,MN...no deals here.

We started "roadtripping" back in 1994 (pre TS days) when our 2 oldest were 2 and 4. We drove to PA to visit relatives, Gettysburg,Philly, etc.

Our next big roadtrip wasn't until 2000 when we had 4 kids (3,5,7,9) borrowed a friends popup and took a 23 day trip to Baltimore, Assateague Island, Norfolk, Williamsburg, D.C., PA, Niagara Falls, and back through Canada--including the Soo Locks.

Since then, we've added a 5th son and with the 5 we've driven to:
Palm Springs (and from there day trips to San Diego and LA), Houston, Provo and Salt Lake City for DH's computer job, Orlando.

We drive to Wisconsin Dells each winter and are planning a trip to South Dakota this June.

When we drove to Florida, we left Duluth the night before Thanksgiving at 4pm and drove straight through, stopping to nap from 5:30-7 am and for turkey dinner from ~6:30 - 8:00pm. Otherwise, just 10-15 minute rest stops every 2 hours or so. We arrived in Ocala, FL at 10pm on Thanksgiving.
On the way home, we stayed overnight halfway, then home.

We acquired a number of techniques to keep everyone busy, and it's surprisingly peaceful!

I enjoy to drive. We have driven down to Orlando the last 3 years from NJ. Wife didn't want to do another long drive to Nashville in May since we are driving to Hilton Head this summer, so we are actually flying. But I got such a good fare ($130 RT thru Southwest) that it is about the same cost to fly there as to drive there and that includes getting a rental car. Usually just can't justify spending money on 4 airfares when we can drive and save a couple of hundred dollars. It does help that our minivan gets around 20 miles to the gallon, so we don't get killed on the cost of gas, though if gas hits $4-5 dollars, I may have to look at the cost difference again.
