Has anyone ever gotten a car seat from a car rental company? I am flying with out 21 month old for the 1st time and dreading having to carry her car seat and check it in the with the airlines.

You have to check with the car rental company to make sure they have one in stock. I suggest you call the pick-up location directly and reserve it there. I have done it a couple times with my children in Orlando and it worked out OK.The problem with real life is that there is no background music. -
We thought about doing it a few times, but it always added something like $10 per day to the cost of the car rental. Most times it worked out SO much cheaper to drag the regular car seat and check it or use it on the plane that it was worth the struggle.Comment

We did it once or twice years ago. We found the car seats the companies supplied were usually pretty awful, and expensive. So, we started bringing our own, especially as it made it easier on the plane if the kids were in their car seats. The other thing you might check is to see if any of the cars come equipped with the car seats that are part of the car. But, that may just be in some of the minivan models.LuanneComment

I have taken my grandson places since he's been 3 yrs. old and have had to deal with that issue also. After weighing the price of the car seats with the rental car companies, we always took his with us.
One point though...I can't remember the airline, but in order to use it on the plane it had to be an approved carseat for the airline, so double check with the carrier what their restrictions are for carseats.Comment

Yeah, I kind of figured it was just better off to take ours. Can't use it on the plane as we don't have a seat for the 21 month old. Since she is under 2 years old, we didn't buy her a ticket. Hoping that because it is off season where we are going, there will be open seats.

Just to summarize the thread and add my 2 cents
Most car rental compainie will allow you to rent car seats from them. The cost will be at least $20, but could be as high as $70+ for the week. They must also be requested beforehand.
Many will decide that it's more cost-effective to bring their own car seat with them. You then have a few options:
1. Take on plane with the child (if there's a seat for the child)
2. Check with your luggage
3. Take with you as carry-on, but then check planeside if there doesn't turn out to be seating for your little angel or if you just want to be able to put child in car seat at layovers (for whatever reason)
Typically, we have taken the car seat with us or had family bring us one at our destination. This has worked well for us. We typically check the car seat planeside (and wrap it in a big plastic garbage bag to keep it clean). Good luck and happy traveling!Comment

So even if I haven't booked a ticket for my daughter I can still try to get seat on via carryon or check it in plane side? Not sure if I want to go thru the hassle. We bought a bag specifically for checkin the seat in as luggage, so I think that is the route we will go. This should be the only time I get to do this anyway, she turns 2 in August and no trips planned before then.

Which car seats
can be used on airplanes?
For infants and children who fit in rear-facing and forward-facing car seats with harnesses: FAA recommends using car seats that have this label: “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.” For best fit in aircraft seats, use a seat less than 16 inches wide.
For families traveling from overseas: foreign car seats can be used if they meet the standards of a foreign government or the United Nations. (Check for a label on the seat.)
Not allowed: booster seats or child vests. Also, NO "belly belts" made to hold a child on an adult’s lap (allowed in some countries).
For children over age 2 without car seats: seat belts must be used. A snug fit may not be possible for small, thin children.
For children who no longer fit into car seats with harnesses: lap belts must be used. The aircraft seat belt may fit a child better than a lap belt in a motor vehicle. Thanks for the info. Our carseat is an Eddie Bauer and for the money we spent on it, I should hope it ok on the plane. I will have to verify.
