  • Which island in the Caribbean

We are looking to go to one of the islands in the Caribbean sometime in the future. We don't have children that would travel with us.
We have been to all the USVI, Dominica, Grenada, DR, and Aruba.

    Requirements:
White sandy beaches with few rocks
Trade winds, what time of year?
Not too commercialized, still has island charm
Ability to take day trips to other islands
    Reasonable prices for food
    Casino a plus not necessary
Need some activities, but not a lot of them

    Where would you go?
    Where would you stay?

    Thanks all for the input!

St. Martin/ Sint Maarten would match your requirements best, especially for day trips to other islands. There are easy day trips to Anguilla (British colony, very low key, great beach), St. Barths (French colony, best upscale), and Saba (Dutch colony, great nature island, wonderful rain forest but no real beach), all by boat, and to Statia (Dutch colony, small, relatively undeveloped) by air. Plus St. Martin itself, being have French and half Dutch is essentially two islands in one.

I agree with Steve although the one criteria SXM will not meet is the one that has me never wanting to go back. It is very very crowded and developed on the dutch side where the majority of timeshares are.

Still it hits every other point you are looking for and no other island will do that.

Oh, that was one thing that is important..didn't even think to mention...not crowded.

I've been looking all morning, does anyone know how Tortola is...they have all kinds of trips to other islands, beaches look nice, no casino,

        Thoughts?

Not available thru timeshare though but BVIs would be perfect as well, less the casino.

You could book one of the nicer little timeshares on St Thomas, like Elysian or Bluebeards Beach Club and ferry out to other islands (BVI) from Redhook or book daytrips a few days.

Have you looked at Grand Cayman The Reef or Morritts? GCM is pricey food wise but there are tons of things to do. I don't think you could really island hop unless maybe a day trip to Cayman Brac. My current timeshare favorite.

Another thought is the Tradewinds cruises. Pricey but the reviews are fabulous. I would do one in a heartbeat but DH gets seasick.

I'm going to St Thomas in Feb 09. I know that you can take a ferry to St John. What other islands/day trips, are available from St Thomas?
