That's why I have stayed on the French side every trip after my first one to SXM. When I have used timeshare, it has been Cottages de Lonvilliers, which is in a secluded location with a nice uncrowded beach at a neighboring hotel that you have access to, and a short drive to Grand Case, the restaurant capital of the Caribbean or to Orient Beach. Unless things have changed, the French side also does not have the timeshare tax that the Dutch side does.Originally posted by lawren2 View PostComment

Oyster Bay thru Interval is just south of the French side but with the new hotel resort on Dawn Beach and relative remoteness from Marigot I wouldn't recommend it.Lawren

I think this one has more of a european appeal than most americans are used to getting on certain islands. The more glitzy and amenitied resorts will be on the dutch side.Originally posted by jericap View Post
We stayed at Royal Islander Club la Plage last time and if you head away from Phillipsburg toward Grand Case and Marigot you escape the traffic and fast food chains. Plus the nicest casino is right across the street as is a supermarket. Honestly the beaches of SXM are gorgeous and you would have to drive to those no matter where you stay on the island.
I didn't mean to turn you off towards St Maarten. I just preferred the SXM of 18 and 13 years ago to the one I visited 4 years ago. It has plenty of fans.Lawren

No, you didn't scare me off at all. I really don't like crowded and commercialized places. I like to go to a place and know it's in the Caribbean as opposed to having everything we have here. I don't mind being out of my comfort zone.
No, reading the reviews of the Cottages in RCI scared me off; that's why I was asking about the Cottages.
Although after the issue I just had with RCI, I don't know if I want to use them!!
