We had one of the 1BR units and everything was fine.

I used to own at Oyster Bay, and visited it a time or two but never stayed there. During the time I owned, I always deposited it with DAE. The remoteness was a plus, but new hotel development may well change the equation. It is probably easier to get into Phillipsburg than Marigot from the resort. I like Cottages de Lonvilliers better. My unit at Oyster Bay was also only a studio, which was a big incentive to trade it rather than use it.

Well, that helps me a lot, I don't need 5 star or luxury, just something decent.

I tried to deposit my unit yesterday in RCI and had some trouble with the VC.

I'm going to try again today.

Did you need a car there (Cottages)? Do they speak some English?

Yes, you do need a car, but car rental is quite cheap on SXM. Yes, they do speak English. The manager's English is quite good, and I had an interesting conversation with him one afternoon about the timeshare industry in the Caribbean and in Europe.

I own on St Maarten, at LaVista, a small & sweet resort, but not to everyone's liking.

Renting a car on SXM is good. They are right side of the road drivers as we are in the US which is a plus while on vacation.

The crime rate is important to me in selecting an island.
Actually, selecting anywhere, Caribbean or other, I usually check it out.

SXM is climbing, Jamaica has, reportedly, high murder and other violent crime rate.

Petty crime is pretty common. Don't leave anything on a beach towel or in your car but that is just common sense for ANYWHERE. I had a camera stolen there last time. But then who imagined someone hopping a 5 foot cyclone fence when I was 10 feet away from the blanket?

I found a wallet that car thieves had dropped while running in the Orient Beach parking lot.

I returned it to the owner, he lived in Dominica - business card was in there- and he said that his car had been broken into three times.

I did not have a problem the two times I've been there, but did see enough poverty which is reflected in theft crimes.
