Psychologically - it makes me feel better!
Oh sure, then they unzip the bag and wear them on their heads (this is always the mental picture I have). Portnoy's

    Complaint.

I feel like saying, why don't you check out the bags that are locked and ticking ????

They don't take up much room, Pat.

Had a brand new men's shirt (souvenir for a friend) which was packed, but never made it home. Jet Blue.

Twice I sent things home to my MIL in Hawaii. Twice, an item each time did not make it. United.
We gifted my brother-in-law's kids an XBox 360 last summer when we met them in Las Vegas. They were to fly back home to India via Singapore and Bangkok. When they reached home, they found the Xbox 360 missing from the checked in luggage, along with a brand new Coach bag that his wife had bought

I have learned to travel with my oldest clothes so I can feel comfy and leave them there. More room in the suitcase! You can always buy something new. I don't take any jewelry with me anymore or many shoes. We mostly travel to places where dressing up is not required. Europe or big cities here may be different as people dress up more.

We lost a pair of designer sunglasses in the elevator when the porter took our luggage down in a separate elevator. They were in the outer pocket. We noticed it immediately but how can you prove it so we let it go as we didn't want to make a scene. We even had tipped him well so felt like fools. This was in Mexico at the hotel part of a timeshare resort (Paradise Village).

It is my goal to travel really light from now on and may send extra stuff by UPS if I have to pay for additional bags anyway. I read that tip here.

On 2 of my last 4 flights, my luggage was apparently selected to be checked by TSA and did not make the same plane as I did.
I checked in 3 1/2 hours early so time was not the issue, the non caring TSA was.
This can be a really bad way to start a trip since you don't really know if and when you will see things again.
It's not much better coming home without it either. The airline delivered a bag to my home which was NOT mine, did not come back to pick that
bag up for 5 days and were not too receptive to finding the correct bag because, as they kept telling me, they had delivered two bags to my home already. The fact that one was not mine did not seem to be a concern.

I am going to the UK in 2 weeks with one 21" CARRYON.

              It can be done.
Smart packing, some old things that I will leave there to be swapped for space for souvenirs ---
Given the happenings these days, I will never check luggage again.

I guess I have been lucky. Nothing ever missing and the bags eventually show up when misplaced.

DH is the one that overpacks but he didn't spend 15 years packing for business trips as I did. DS13 & I usually only require one medium suitcase and if it is just me I could go in carry-on. However I am not a clothes horse and don't do shoes or accessories.

Thinking the frillies might be going in carry-on anyway going forward.

When we were at Velas Vallarta a few years ago we met some people who had flown Mexicana. The had left the tags on the new clothes that they bought for the trip and when they arrived their old clothes were still in the bags but the new ones were gone. I often think about this and if I'm taking something I'd hate to lose I put it in my carry on.

I've decided I'm going to stop packing anything I really like. I had my favorite jacket and a couple of other things I really like in a bag I thought I was never going to see again about a month ago.

I took a voluntary bump from Northwest during the chaos caused by all the AA groundings. They booked me on Delta and United to get me home. My bag apparently stayed on the Northwest flight, got to Detroit, and they didn't know what to do with it.

The airlines made me file the claim with United because they were my last carrier, but they had never seen the bag. Northwest wouldn't talk to me, though I knew they had it. They wouldn't even give me a phone number for the Knoxville baggage office so I could ask them if it was there and unidentified.

After two days of phone calls, the two airlines got together and found my bag.

As for thefts, I probably don't have anything worth stealing. Maybe my New Balance sneakers.

Never pack anything in a checked bag that I could not afford to lose. That said, never had anything missing in over 2.5 million miles but most of that was with only carry-ons.

I always remind the DW that we are not going to Antarctica so she can buy what you need if she doesn't pack it.

I also ship home via UPS, DHL, etc. anythiing we don't want to carry on or check.

                      Cheers
