  • Where would you go in late October?

Just two of us, early 50's, not active hiker types, more sightseeing, less strenuous activities. We're thinking northeast color, but would that be too late? Open to any suggestions for US travel, though, as we've only just begun to travel.

    Thanks.

Too late for leaves in the Northeast. It would have to be earlier in October depending on what state you wanted to visit.
There are some nice areas throughout Maine in late October.
I travel there for business quite a bit, so I can't give you names of timeshares, but I know there are people here that go to Maine regularly.
If you do a search for "Maine" on this site, it will give you some ideas.

The Maine coast can be nice in late October, tho it is pushing the season quite a bit. The nice thing is the lack of crowds. Cape Cod might be another thought.

        Palm Springs/Palm Desert

We went there for the first time late last October and it was heaven. Low crowds as it's "low season", perfect weather, wonderful! We'd go every October if we could. We stayed at Marriott Shadow Ridge and couldn't have been happier.

I agree. We also went late October last year. We were there for Halloween. We stayed at the Westin Mission Hills, which was wonderful.

The weather was perfect, and the town was bustling with Halloween parades, parties, shows, etc. They take Halloween very seriously in Palm Springs. Even the dogs get dressed in costumes.

          We had a blast!

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

            Florida

We love Florida in late October. Ocean water may or may not be warm enough for swimming, but it is after families have been there (summer) and before snow birds start arriving.

            ps. We love Florida anytime.

              Northeast late October....
It is definitely cool in New England by then.... I went to Stowe, Vermont Sept 28-Oct 5 and we were wearing jackets and gloves in the evening.

So coastal areas would be your best bet....
New York City - museums, shows, tours and great restaurants
Atlantic City area (Very Nice Marriott TS near there) - day trips to Philadelphia/New York City/Cape May
Ocean City, Maryland or Virginia Beach, VA - off season but still very nice.

Williamsburg - this would be my choice if u haven't been....very nice TS resorts, LOTs to see - many day trips, Colonial Williamsburg/Jamestown Settlement

and then of course Myrtle Beach/HHI

The Outer Banks are wonderful that time of year.

Southern CA beaches because the weather is still nice and the crowds are gone. I also vote for the desert area as others have posted already.

That's a great time to visit several of the Western National Parks. It's after the busy summer season, but not too cold at many of them. Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands would all be just about perfect weather, IMO. Death Valley might still be a bit warm, but not too bad. Yellowstone is starting to get cold, but wouldn't be bad towards the beginning of the month. (Ditto for Grand Teton NP). Glacier would be cold, but still pretty.

I also agree with So. Cal., Williamsburg (and surrounding areas), as well as Florida (but I'd go later in the month, when it's a bit cooler).

And, I hear anytime is a great time to go to Hawaii.

All very good suggestions so far... Late Oct is really a great time to travel if you are not restricted by school schedule. This year, DH and I will be going to Caribbean (St. Thomas/St. John) in later Oct/early Nov without the kids. No crowd, and hopefully no hurricane to worry about by then...

Late October and Early November should be a good time to visit Key West.

We have been there in early November and really enjoyed it.

                            Allegheny Mountains

Even though you may be missing peak color the visibility,
crisp weather, no crowds and rural flavor is very refreshing. I am partial to Pa, Md, Va,WV & NC, especially Va.

Great time for Cancun, of course Orlando would be nice too-just make sure you don't go on the British school break.
