  • EZ Pass

We just came back from Atlantic City and thought..how nice would it be to have EZ Pass.
I went to their website to check things out and still need to ask questions.
I lease 2 of my vehicles and own 2 of them. When we travel we aren't always sure which car we're going to take until it's time to go.

Are the tags moveable from one car to another? Or do I have to get tags for all the cars?

How long does it take to get the tags? As we are gone most of the next 2 months into different parts of New England; it would be nice if we had them when we are traveling.

I think technically you're not supposed to move the tags around, but everyone does. They come with plastic Velcro strips to hang the tags inside the windshield.

When we go on vacation, though, if we rent a car in NY/NJ, I drag the EZ Pass around in my purse and just hold it up to the spot on the windshield when we're entering a toll plaza. You just have to remember to use it (not just drive through because you're so used to having it!!!!) and to take it home when you give the car back.

As long as you have all the plates listed on your account the tags are moveable. The reason for listing the plates is that if you should have a problem and the transponder doesn't register they know which account to charge and you don't get fine notices.

I've even used mine for the trucks and trailers for the horses but we go thru a manned booth then to make sure they charge the correct adjusted amounts.

I've had mine for so long I couldn't tell you what the turn around is on them.

If you use EZPass you also get discounts on the tolls.

I've never used one in your state, but I used one in California. They may be different, so I think if nobody has experience with your exact situation you should call and ask.

In California you got a transponder which you put on the windshield of your car. It fastened on with Velcro. Since I drove two different cars, instead of placing it on my windshield I kept it in my purse. Just before I got to the toll booth I would take it out and hold it near the front of the dash, in the window. It would always work. Once in a great while I'd forget. When this happened I'd see a flash, and get a letter in the mail with a fine notice. The fine notice had a place to put your transponder number if you had one, so it wasn't a big deal.

I got an EZ pass holder from our car wash, and they also sell them here at auto parts store (AID or Pep Boys). They are plastic and have suction cups that attach to the windshield. You just pop them on and off each car. It was about $5.

Thanks for all the replies..boy, that holder is a great idea...I don't think they sell them in CT.
Maybe I can find out where they sell them and pick one up.

I don't need to pay tolls on a regular basis, but we sure loved having an EZ Pass on our drive to Williamsburg a few years ago. I also am glad to have it when I do round trips to pick up my mother on LI and drive back to Boston. Because I don't need it regularly, I just throw it on the dash and let it wedge itself between the dash and the window. It doesn't move and I don't need to fiddle with it at a toll station.

                EZ Pass good except in

Florida. The Sun Pass can be purchased online which we will do before next February. Otherwise, I think EZ Pass is good on the rest of the East coast.

You usually will get away with moving the EZ Pass between cars for awhile without registering all of the license plates, but they eventually catch up to you. I had gotten a new car and just moved the EZ Pass from the old to the new without ever thinking about it. Worked for weeks, then we decided to drive to Florida, and don't you know all of the sudden we start getting messages as we go thru the tolls "Call Service Center." So I get out my cell and call them as we are driving. Low and behold, they needed the new car license plate. Which turned out to be a problem, since we were driving at the time and I had no clue what the number was. Had to turn off on to the shoulder, run around the car and read it off to them. A mildly amusing scenario.

This might have more to do with the issuing agency rather than EZPass. When I lived in New Jersey I had two devices that I routinely swapped among three vehicles without issue. In addition, one of the registered tag numbers was incorrect, something I caught years later, so this particular EZPass issuer (DRPA)was obviously not doing any kind of comparison.

EZPass is definitely the way to go for travel on toll roads in the northeast corridor.

We can't transfer our EZ passes from one car to another. They are tied to the license plate to which you register them. Use in a wrong car equals a ticket.
