    Nation's best beach named
    'Dr. Beach' selects Florida's remote Caladesi Island

    The beach at Caladesi Island State Park has been named the No. 1 beach in the continental United States for the last two years, but the No. 2 beach overall. It's in the running for the No. 1 spot overall for 2008.

    CALADESI ISLAND, Florida - Florida's Caladesi Island is the best U.S. beach in 2008, according to an annual list compiled by a Florida professor known as "Dr. Beach."

    Caladesi's relatively remote Gulf of Mexico location factored into Florida International University professor Stephen P. Leatherman's ranking.

    "It's an island getaway," said Leatherman, who studies changing coastlines and has released his annual list since 1991. He noted that despite being in the densely populated Tampa Bay area, many nearby residents have never visited Caladesi.

    The runners-up on the list are
    Hanalei Beach, Hawaii;
    Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Florida;
    Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York;
    Coronado Beach in San Diego;
    Main Beach in East Hampton, New York;
    Hamoa Beach, Hawaii;
    Cape Hatteras, North Carolina;
    Cape Florida State Park near Miami;
    and Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

    Caladesi's fine, white quartz sand beach owes its creation to a 1921 hurricane, which separated it from nearby Honeymoon Island. Caladesi became a state park in 1968.

    Caladesi, which ranked second in Leatherman's rankings in 2007, will now be retired from the list. Most years, he has chosen beaches in Florida or Hawaii as the top-ranked. He broke that trend last year by awarding the top spot to Ocracoke Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

    Leatherman compiles his list as part of the National Healthy Beaches Campaign.

    Caledesi Island

    I live part-time close to Caledesi. I've been there once. You either need a boat or have to pay to take a pontoon boat shuttle there. (Currently I think $9 per person). Although the beach is nice, I don't think it's worth the cost. You may also have to pay the state park fee to get into Honeymoon Island State park to catch the shuttle. I have a yearly Florida State Park pass, so didn't have to pay that.

    I would not rate it number one, but then I'm not the person being paid to rate beaches.

      Nancy isn't this near Honeymoon Island? I used to love day tripping over there as well as Tarpon Springs for sponges. I'm sure it has changed quite a bit since my last visit +/- 20 years ago.

          Caledesi

          It is near Honeymoon. You have to take the shuttle from Honeymoon to get to Caledesi unless you have your own boat.

          ps. I've heard of people walking there at low tide, but don't know where they walk from. I'd be worried that tide would go in and I'd get caught.
