I found a small article here on CNN. But this article states it's cutting snacks, not drinks...maybe more to come.
Here are the highlights of the story:

    Story Highlights
US Airways to eliminate free snacks in coach class starting June 1

Cut was needed to save money in a time of extremely high fuel costs, airline said

The airline is still providing complimentary soft drinks

If you are holding any NW drink coupons US air is no longer taking them. I had 10 go to waste on me. What is funny is I got the NW coupons from US air because of problems with the flight, AC broke.

Charging for food and drink on flights is becoming much more common in Europe too. Charter and LCCs are already well down that route. Many charter airlines also charge extra to sit parties together, and have reduced the baggage allowance.

One tip is to NOT drink the coffee on an airplane, just trust me on that one.....

They are just trying to make a profit on the drinks, does it really cost them $2 for a can of coke?

No about .50, but they have to pay someone to stock it on the plane , they have to buy the ice maker(yu mormaly get ice) they have to buy the plastic cup, and they have to pay the attendant to service it to you, plus the extra waight on the flight cost more fuel, and more fuel cost the plane to burn more fuel, I vote we only fly to warm climate, ship our luggage and just fly in our bathing suites

When stuck with airline coupons you can't use, swap them for something on an airline that you can at Coupon Connection on Flyer Talk.
