  • Phoenix Rental Cars

What are the options for rental cars in Phoenix? We are going to need one for two weeks and when doing a search the taxes, etc. are almost 1/2 as much as the rental car. Are there rental places that will pick you up at the airport and take you back?

I used Fox which was off site and cheap for Phoenix. Shuttle. No complaints and much less tax than a major right in Sky Harbor.

I believe in Phoenix, all the car rental counters are housed in a main arena area offsite. The rental car shuttle bus comes and brings you to this area for pick up. I don't remember seeing any independent shuttles near the aiport for pick up, just the generic car rental bus.
It might be a good idea, if you staying in Phoenix, to take a taxi to the resort and arrange from there.

We thought the taxes, etc., were way too high at the Phoenix airport, so DH took the Super Shuttle to a near-by Advantage Rental Car location while I gathered luggage. Then DH drove back to airport to pick me up (along with our luggage). I think we paid some small extra fee to just drop off car at airport, instead of doing the Super Shuttle/car routine for returning our car.

If you are staying at an airport hotel the first night you might want to try the Tempe location of Budget Car rental....they offer free pick up at the hotel, drive you to the rental site and you fill out the paperwork there and drive off.

We have used them twice with no problem, saving on average 1/2 off the airport sites. Both times we rented for one day, one way from Phoenix to Flagstaff, no extra fees.

In the past, in efforts to get around surcharges, we have rented one way rentals to the location of the resort, dropping off the car and getting a one week rental at that area location, and saved money that way too.

We are just back a month from our Sedona trip... where we flew into PHX. I researched all I could but found little option but to go with an airport based rental car agency. I used Advantage, which was cheapest, AND was in the shuttle serviced rental car complex. I had even called Advantage directly (but I will say the gal was a twit) to see if a non-airport location was available (to save on taxes) and it didn't seem so Fox, Advantage, etc. were all MUCH cheaper than the majors but still housed in the new car rental complex.

We were "on the fly" and staying a night in a local hotel and doing a car rental out of that wasn't in our plans - but if it would work for you, I certainly think it's worth checking out. The taxes are OUTRAGEOUS!

FYI - I booked a mini-van for just under $400 for 10 days. I then upgraded at the rental desk for $65 (all in) to a full size SUV. Same luggage space as the mini-van (the rental desk jockey said it had more but that was flat out not true in reality) but we felt the ride, etc. was worth it for us. Well after I left the car rental place I had the thought that I should have refused the upgrade and then seen if I could have gotten it anyway for free or a little green appreciation to the clerk. Ah, maybe next time if I think of it. Oh, and the guy at the desk did come down in price off the inital "offering" so hesitating did save me some $$.

I used the strategy suggested here (or OT) to book my vehicle NOW and then check periodically and then check several times a day at the 2 week out mark until leaving for the airport. I did this and it allowed me to snag the under $400 rental cost when it was offered online just once for several hours... and then the price bounced back up.

            Good luck to you!

I check the Advantage website and they didn't list Phoenix. Is there a number in Phoenix to call?

I used both the CarRental.com site recommended on these boards as well as this site below, which I actually got using a link on Southwest.com:

Rental Cars, BreezeNet Rental Cars and Rental Car Discounts, Car Rentals, Guide to Rental Car Deals, Low Rates and Car Rental Specials

This site is the one that happened to have better rate offerings for me (this time) AND showed some of the "discount" rental agencies that carrental didn't show. The website was easy to use and showed multiple rental rates in a format that was easy to see/compare rates across companies, including the majors. I booked my rental thru them, subsequently booked a cheaper rental thru them, and cancelled the first reservation, all on line, all very easily, with no hassle. So I feel confident recommending this site... YMMV of course.
