  • September trip to Washington DC

Last year I bought a very cheap 154,000 Fairfield/Wyndham membership. My main reason for doing this is that I like staying at the Wyndham resort in Alexandria when I visit Washington DC. I had plans to go to DC this September to attend the National Book Festival held September 27th. I made my reservations at the Alexandria Resort back in February not knowing who would make the trip with me. I made some plans with two friends of mine but they informed me a couple of weeks ago that they would not be able to make the trip. In the meantime I’ve learned that many of my cousins are going to be in Myrtle Beach starting September 28th and I want to join them also so I am tacking on 5 nights at Myrtle Beach immediately following my 5 night stay in DC. (I also have lots of Bluegreen points) So now I was left with finding someone who could manage to be gone 10 days and who would enjoy going to both DC and Myrtle Beach. The day that the one set of friends canceled just happened to be two days after another friend lost her husband. He had been ill for quite some time so her traveling had all been nixed for the last two years. I thought I remembered her saying she wanted to go to Washington sometime while she still could. I knew with all her funeral plans and everything she would be overwhelmed but I wrote her a letter with her condolence card explaining my plans for the trip. It turns out she has never been to DC and has wanted to go there for several years. After we talked I got to thinking that 5 days is not enough to see all of DC and the surrounding areas so today I called and booked 2 days at Shenandoah Crossing. From where we live to Shenandoah Crossing is about an 8.5 hour drive. Driving up the back of the Blue Ridge should be gorgeous is late September. We’ll spend Sunday and Monday nights at Shenandoah Crossing and have time to visit Monticello and James Madison’s home. On Tuesday it’s only a 2.5 hour drive to Alexandria but we will go by way of Mt. Vernon and probably spend 3 or 4 hours there and have lunch there. There is so much to see at Mt. Vernon. Tuesday night we’ll get ensconced in a luxury 2 bedroom condo in Alexandria and we will have 3 whole days to tour DC before going to the Book Festival on Saturday. I can spend a whole day just in the National Gallery of Art even though I’ve been there many times. One thing I’ve never done when going to DC is visiting Hillwood (the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post) and I’m going to do that this time or bust.

After 5 days of sight-seeing we’ll spend a whole day driving Sunday to get down to Myrtle Beach for 5 nights at the Ocean. I have an oceanfront 2 bedroom unit at Shorecrest I. Then on Friday it will be home which is about a 4.5 hour drive from Myrtle Beach. Neither of us are Spring chickens but I plan to do what we can at a pace that suits us. I do fine on the driving, it’s the walking that get’s me and in DC there will be lots of walking but we can also use the Metro and the tour buses. If I didn’t have timeshares I doubt I would plan such a trip, but I love the way that timeshares allow me to do this. We will probably plan lunches at both Mt. Vernon and Hillwood, but having full kitchens will allow us to do many of our meals at the condo. Gas for the whole trip will cost between $250.00 to $300.00 but basically it will be a very inexpensive trip and I am really looking forward to it. I should go in the tour guide business.

Maggie that sounds like a great trip you have planned with your friend at a time she will appreciate it.

I am very glad you were able to get the "add-ons" at the other timeshares and are able to take the trip. The drive up from the mountains sounds lovely and Washington is a fun town to visit as long as one doesn't have to do it in the heat with the summer crowds.

I look forward to your "travel tale" for this one!

Love the places you're going - what fun!!!

Have you been to the International Spy Museum yet? Arlington Cemetery? We enjoyed both of those a lot too.

            Have a great trip!!!

Thanks to all for your answers and I will certainly consider the membership at Hillwood. I've written to our Congressman for White House tours and I'm sure we will buy the 2 day shuttle pass on the tour bus. My traveling companion is 74 but she is still pretty active so I'm trying to plan the trip with maximum sight seeing at minimal walking.
