I never bring my laptop when traveling out of the States, the above is another reason not to.

This is crazy. We have really let things get out of control. What happened to our freedoms?

It's not just laptops if you read the first few paragraphs of the article. It's ANY electronic device and that includes cell phones.

It's a slow news day again and the media needs to whip the masses into an unwarrented frenzy about nothing. When we cruise, I take my laptop with me. When we travel, we have an international cell phone that goes with us as well as our camera's and iPods. It is virtually impossible for most of us to travel without any electronic device and likewise would be impossible for the government to remove a substantial number of electronic devices without some sort of reason.

It may be a slow news day that got this reported but I don't agree that it is an unwarrented frenzy and it certaintly isn't about nothing. It is all about freedom, the thing that they are supposedly protecting! And it's not how many they take it is the fact that they can take them at all without any proof of wrongdoing that is disturbing.

Wow, I would be pretty upset if they took my cell phone, or lap top.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

This has been a risk for a long time. I first read about it in 2002. Since then, I still take my laptop out of the country, but I back everything up before I leave, and I email to myself (at my yahoo mail address) everything new that I create while I am out of the country.

That way, if my laptop is confiscated, it does not devastate my business and I simply have a damages/reimbursement claim that is not urgent.

I suppose if it were to happen all the time, I'd be a little more concerned. But if we asked everyone to raise their hand that has had this happen to them or known of someone who it's happened to, even a friend of a friend of a friend, I suspect you'd find it's a very rare event.

I remember back in the late 70's and early 80's when the media had whipped everyone into a frenzy over child abdutions. The numbers they were putting out were unbelievable.......literally. There was a speaker at our school who was addressing the problem and asked everyone in the audience who knew of a child abuduction to raise their hands. No one did and it was a decent sized audience. Then he asked everyone in the audience who knew of someone who had been killed in the Vietnam war to raise their hands. A few went up. Then there was the comparison of numbers for child abductions put out by our friends in the media compared to the number killed in Vietnam. Needless to say, the media's numbers didn't stand the test. Our media has to shock us to gain audience and in doing so creates mass frenzy. fear. worry and anger. The really sad part is people fall for it every time.

The news media doesn't just report the news anymore. They feel they have to entertain as well. The fact that the feds can inspect or examine you personal belongings isn't a new thing. I'm pretty certain you'll find instances of such confiscations dating back to our revelotionary times. All in the name of national security.

We are not a completely free nation. We are just a little more free than most.

Well said! My prime example is the frenzy over the Natalie Holloway case and the DANGERS of the Caribbean. Dreadful case for the family but the countless hours of coverage was meant to inflame and hype ratings, not inform.

                    Cheers

Unfortunately, this is a chance that I have to take. My laptop has to go with me when I travel.
