        I passed a $2.75 today!
I don't carpool because I come and go alot at my job and don't want to have to depend on anyone or have anyone depend on me, but it would be nice to buy gas only once every 2 weeks.

Great article. I came close to buying the new Lexus Hybrid last year when it first came out. I did not buy it because the truck space could not hold my Luggage. I would still bought one if it was large enough but after reading the article and you do the math it does not pay. Maybe when they start to mass produce this will lower the price and it may be worth it one day.

Thanks for the article. We always read the CR car issue. We would like to buy a hybrid but are holding off until the economies of scale kick in as well as reliability is proven. The 1994 suv runs well and we will hang on to it until the above kicks in or the mortgage is completely paid off whichever comes first.

Ok I see your point, but in most respects I'm "not guilty" of any of these offenses except for the trip to the gas station one. Even then, I have that scheduled with my trip to Trader Joes and the butcher if we would like that occasional porterhouse as all 3 are in the same area of NJ. NJ gas taxes/prices are much much less for gas than NY.

I admit I go to the store a couple of times a week but it is not caused by poor planning ( bulk things like tampons and paper products are a monthly Costco trip ). We live a half-mile from our supermarket and it is a hang-over from my days in the city when I lived only a block and a half away. Fresh deli, veggies, et al. If it weren't such a steep hill each way I'd walk it.

                  One more today, Saturday...

Son-in-law wanted weed killer and masonry bit from Lowe's. I had been putting off going the 12 mile round trip until there was something that required going that way. I wanted PVC pipe and fittings and some screen.

OK, so we were going and specifically asked the wives if there was anything needed down that way. NOPE, nothing needed.

When we returned, we found the women has gone to the mall to return some things. The mall is a quarter mile from Lowe's.

My daughter works at WalMart Monday through Friday, half mile from Lowe's.
Son-in-law made a delivery to WalMart on his route, yesterday.

With some forethought, both trips today could have been prevented.

The old habits when gas was cheap are hard to break. Eventually though, progress will be made by those who care.

This is one of the reasons why I hate living in the UK. Our petrol is on average 79.9p per litre.

                      Convert litres to gallons = 79.9p * 3.78 = 302.02p per US gallon

                      Convert GBP to USD = 302.02p * 1.76 = 5.31

So we pay the equivalent of $5.31 per gallon.

                      Ouch !

I commute when I can to try to cut my expenses for gas.

There is also a program called NuRide. It can be found at www.nuride.com. What it does is find people to commute together and then rewards them. So, if I drive with 1 person for a week, it will reward you 100 pts/day. After you collect 1000 pts., you are eligible to turn the points in for certificates, such as Brookstone for a 10.00 gift certificate.
They don't have a lot of choices, but 2500 pts will give you a $25.00 certificate to Home Depot.
The site also calculates how much you have saved in gas, air pollution and such.

                            Gulp! Try $4.50!

                            Brooklyn gas station floors it

Motorist looks in stunned silence at $4.50 pump price at Brooklyn gas station.

With pump prices rising fast, a gas station under the Brooklyn Bridge took a quantum leap into outrageousness - charging a jaw-dropping $4.50 a gallon!
That's what the Gulf Station on Old Fulton St. in Brooklyn Heights was charging credit card customers for a gallon of premium yesterday.

A gallon of regular gas was no bargain, either, at $4.14 for cash or $4.26 on plastic.

                            Can you believe these prices.....

Oh no! When will it stop? I guess we are in for a long ride this time. The $2.75 this past Labor Day is going to seem like a bargin.

                                $3.09, today in Richmond, VA

I was sent the following website to check for "lower-priced petro" in your
                                zipcode area.

You plug in your zipcode, and the "cheaper" gas prices/gas stations will display

                                http://autos.msn.com/everyday/gassta...?zip=&src=Netx

However, my husband REFUSES to purchase anything but one brand, so the listing did not help us.

We are both retired, and only fill once a month.
                                hope this info helps,
