How does one check with an airline to see if they have a current Frequent Flyer Number and if it is still valid?

Call them. They can look it up under your name.

    Accounts don't expire. Miles do.

I disagree, I had my sons FF # expire from Delta from lack of use, I had to get him a new FF#

Yeah, that happened to me too. I called one airline up after an eight-year absence, and they said "never heard of you". They welcomed me back with a new number though.

Same thing happened to me with AA. I gave them my old #, they couldn't find it in their system, gave me a new # on the spot at the airport counter (this was before the internet was around--not that I'm old or anything ).
