We are planning a trip later this month and I want to bring my puppy onboard. ( I have never traveled with a dog onboard before) my question is I know I have to pay for the dog to travel and I know I have to have permission from the airline (as they only let X amount of dogs on the flight) but can I utilize an online service such as travelocity or expedia to get a better ticket price for me AND then call the airline? or do I have to be at their mercy for the whole trip?

We just flew Frontier with our two cats (just one of the pains in the butt of moving). We booked our tickets online through one of the travel sites, then called Frontier directly for reservations for the animals in baggage.
FWIW, Frontier was helpful every step of the way - the gate agents at the place of departure and the layover were very happy to call down to the baggage crews to make sure the cats were loaded on each flight.

At the end of August, I had made arrangements to fly with a cat (in cabin, NOT baggage) on United. In cabin, United only allows 1 cat per flight, so I would check to make sure you are able to get a reservation for your puppy before booking your flights. Cost was $100. They do have size restrictions. All the information was on their web site.
