  • Airlines Prices Going Down

I booked our January Florida trip as soon as it was available, assuming the fares would be going up, as they always do when the travel dates get closer.

I just looked again because another couple might be going.

The fares have gone down. What would be their return flight is $79 plus $30 for luggage, plus taxes and fees. Not Bad.

One could actually fly from here to there and back, in January peak season, for less than $250.

Just one of our legs was $179, plus the extra crap.

    I'm surprised.

I bought my late-February Orlando flights early too---$269 round trip, direct. They are still a bit above that now, but they were almost double that for the past several months.

This is one of the reasons why I love Southwest - you can switch to the lower price at no charge. Yes, they don't rebate you the money - but will give you a credit to use in one year which we always do.

Whenever I have flights booked with them - I check prices daily and keep taking the lower ones when they pop up.

When SWA opened their schedule on the 6th, it was clear that their fares have really gone up- not down. I think that they lost a bundle on their fuel hedging. Seems like AA is beating them on fares to a number of places. At least that's my experience ex-Chicago.

I did find that SWA had some very high prices about 3-4 months ago. Actually so high I took my November travel plans to Delta and Air Tran. BUT, they have come back down to what I expect....even more. Just booked with them for non-stop from Providence to Orlando for January and got $59 each way (plus taxes)

Southwest doesn't start in Minneapolis until March.

I have been watching prices from MSP to SFO, SJC, SMF to find the lowest prices. Last weekend, for a short period of time, Frontier had a great price, but now their price has more than doubled. Several others have been going up. Now AA is the lowest cost at $300 with one stop, NWA is about $459 direct but awful hours.

I am hoping that this is a short term rise in prices. But...if not, I should probably grab it while the grabbing is good.

Or...do I wait until it is a little closer to our Aug trip (say March when SWA comes into town) and then see what is available?

The same flights the same dates with the same number of bags that we paid $781 for is now $541. With just carry-on it is $421.

For any of the next four weeks, the same flights/bags would be $301 and with just carry-on $181.

Wow! Has the recession hit that hard???!!!

With the $200 cancellation fee, if I rebooked exactly the same flights now we would have a $40 credit, not a refund, and to a credit card we are no longer using, so it would be a hassle.

                      Life is a crapshoot.

When I booked, fuel prices were skyrocketing and airlines were adding surcharges right and left. The economic collapse/recession had not happened yet. I was grabbing seats while I could.

These flights have always been booked full, sold out well in advance. The first date is within the busy holiday timeframe. When I made it to the seat selection page today, I had the pick of the entire plane.

The question now is will the flights still exist come Jan 2 and 16?

Well, the gas prices going down by more than 50% helps. Instead of $4+/gal. it's now less than $2. That has to have somewhat of an impact on pricing.
Hmmm..be interested to see how they look after 1-1
