What is the easiest and fastest way to get from Penn Station to 144th Street? This will be around 7:00 am in the morning?

    Thanks

Here is the link to the NYC area stickie

I am making a wild guess that u r going to Columbia University??? so that would be on the west side.
Penn Station is also on the west side.

Subway 1,2 & 3 run on the west side and connect to Penn Station.

Subway 4,5 & 6 are on the east side and run thru Grand Central Station...
You can connect via the 'shuttle' at 42 street.

We need to know if u r going to the east or west side to guide u to the correct subway - and there are also Alphabet subways, too

Here is a subway map that I find easy to read - it is not 'officail' but very helpful.

So yes, that time of day, the subway is the quickest way uptown. It will be full of people - safe , but be aware of your surroundings.

If you are going to West 144th street, then the subway is direct and fast. The closest subway line will depend on the address (between which avenues on 144th street), but the stop will be 145th street on either the 1, 3, A, or C (all available at Penn Station). If you need to get over to the east side, it'll involve a couple of transfers that I find annoying and could be a challenge for first-timers.

At 7 am, there won't be much traffic so I would probably opt for a taxi if you need to get to the East side.

        Thanks Pat

It's DS that is doing this, so I'm not totally sure where he is going. Next time we talk I'll ask him. I told him probably subway. He has a short time to do this and thought about a cab. He's used to riding DC subway, so won't have problem with subway, just needs to know quickly how to get there. (Wherever there is.)

ps. I've only been to NYC once, so couldn't help him too much.

I take the A train every day. It goes direct from 34th St. and 8th Avenue (right under Penn Station) to 145th and 8th--that's the West Side of Manhattan. It's an express, so it makes many fewer stops than the C (that's the local on the same line) and no stops at all between 59th and 125th Streets, so about 20 minutes total. A cab would take longer and would cost a small fortune for that distance.

Does it matter if it's a weekend or a weekday?

At 7 am, it won't be bad on the weekdays, it'll be dead on the weekend. During rush hour, weekdays are awfully crowded in the subways, most visitors would consider it uncivilized (I'm a native, and I hate the subway at rush hour, though it's the only way to get anywhere at that time - I usually opt for the local instead of the express, just to have a little more space).

                More Info

Okay. DS is finally back from Smuggler's Notch and I've got more info on his NY day trip on Tuesday. He's going to the Millennium Broadway Hotel 145 W 44th Street (different street than I first said). So is subway still the best way? If so, which one and how does he get it from Amtrak station? He arrives in NY at 6:40 am.

                Thanks
                Nancy

Well, I think???? Amtrak comes into Grand Central Station on 42 and Park Avenue.....in fact I am sure he can exit the station on East 44th street heading west.
Walk along East 44th street and go past Madison to Park to Fifth Ave - after 5th Avenue - he will be on WEST 44th Street. The first block, the numbers will run from 1-100, after he passes Sixth Avenue (also called Avenue of the Americas) the numbers will start at 101 - this is the block his hotel is on... 44th between Sixth and Broadway (the next cross street).

If he gets out of the train station onto 42 street, he should turn RIGHT - and head west to Madison Ave - where he will turn right and go up (north) to 44th and then turn left and follow the directions above.

Simple, 15 minute walk. or he can just grab a cab depending on luggage.

                    Thanks

Thanks Pat. I forwarded info to DS. He's only going for a very long day, so won't have luggage. Leaving DC Amtrak station at 3:15 am and returning at 12:20 am. Has about an hour drive to get to DC station, so about a 24 hour junket. Oh, to be young again and able to do that.

No! Wait, Nancy! Amtrak does NOT go into Grand Central. Amtrak comes into Penn Station at 34th and 8th.

I'm still not clear on where he's going? If he wants the A train, he can just go straight downstairs from Penn Station and take the A uptown from there. The C (the local) also goes from the same station, under 34th and 8th, and will go to 145th St. on the west side--it just takes longer because it's the local. The A is the express.

If he just needs to go to the Millennium Hotel, he can walk the ten blocks from 34th and 8th--he just needs to leave Penn Station and walk north for ten blocks.

                        Wacky,

I was wrong in first post. He wants the Millennium Broadway Hotel New York at 145 West 44th Street from Penn Station (Amtrak Station)

                        Thanks

Nancy, between the two of us we will get you there. I am sorry I gave you directions from Grand Central!
If he is arriving at Penn Station/34st Street, all he has to do is exit the station and start walking north on 7th avenue - Macy's is on the corner of 7th and 34 street (and runs thru the block to 6th ave/Broadway) - until he gets to 44th Street. 20 city blocks equals one mile.

                          Sorry again for the confusion!

Thanks Pat and Wacky. I'm sure he'll find it okay. He's pretty good at getting around. I've forwarded all of your info to him, so he can look at it. Originally he only had 20 minutes, but changed to an earlier train, so he has plenty of time.

                            Thanks again,
                            Nancy

ps. He's quite capable of walking 10 blocks or so.

I always joke about giving people directions in NYC. The streets are numbered...it's the world's most organized grid system. BUT he could always Mapquest it for exact directions.

I'll be at Penn Station today myself. Any questions?
