If weight is not a primary consideration, I suggest the old American Standard "hard" cases. Luggage takes one hell of a beating and these old cases seem to be able to take it.

My next set of luggage is going to be something very colorful, with a pattern that will set it apart. I've used everything method out to set my black luggage apart from everyone else. Only problem is everyone else is doing the same thing.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

What's best depends on a number of factors so it's not easy to provide a definitive answer.
There was a question in the travel supplement of our Sunday newspaper a couple of weeks ago on the subject. The response was along the lines that cheap luggage is a false economy. It went on to recommend some with starting price from £300 ($450) per case. That's more than we spend on some holidays!!

Last year I bought a Travel Pro and I love it. I bring it on board with me. But I was talking to some long time road warriors and they said that they buy from Wal-mart and Target because their bags take such a beating. When it breaks, they just buy another bag.

Check the Tuesday Morning Store nearest you. They carry name-brand luggage for prices lower than what I've seen at Kohl's and dept stores on sale. For Christmas, I just bought my daughter a four-piece Joseph Abboud set there for around $450 and it looks fantastic. The quality in the construction appears to me to be superior to the other brands I was considering. I got the 28-in, 25-in, 21-in uprights and a rolling garment bag. They are only average in terms of weight, though.

I use the North Face Doubletrack 21 and have no problem bringing everything I need in it. Getting this bag on the plane is no problem; this allows me to carry a camera /laptop bag on also. Once on the plane I take off the backpack and keep it with me under the seat and put the biggest part of the bag overhead. Getting off the plane I just put the backpack on my back and wheel the big bag off the plane, once off the plane I stop and put it all back together and continue to wheel it wherever I am going.

I've bought the name brands in the past and they didn't last. I bought medium price luggage and they didn't last. Now I just buy the Cheapest, colorful luggage ($40 at woots) I can and when it doesn't last, I'm OK with that. Oh yeah, and I look for light weight too.

We have bright colored straps that go around the entire suitcase. Easy to spot standing back from the carousel, plus added assurance should my wife overload the zippers.
