  • Companion Air Tickets?

I have received over the years several offers (magazines, credit cards) offering a free companion airline ticket if I subscribe or enroll, and then purchase a ticket. I have ignored these assuming they would be a hassle to use. Has anyone had experience with using a companion ticket?

We love the Alaskaair companion tickets. It comes with their Alaskaair credit card. While not free (costs $50- ticket that is) you get the companion ticket every year when your card renews. The great thing about their companion ticket is that it can be used for any fare ticket. I have found a lot of the other airlines' companion tickets can only be used when you purchase a full fare cash ticket.

Haven't checked recently, but in the past I found it cheaper to just buy 2 tickets at a discount. Using the "companion" offer, costs more (or sometimes the same, but with extra hassle and limitations).
Has anyone found an offer that is a real deal?
I did not know about Alaska Air.

It's a great plan. Every year, without fail. Use it for two cheap tickets or two first class and the price for the second ticket is the same - $50. Plus both passengers get FF miles for the flight as well.

Yep - DW and I are going to Puerto Vallarta in Feb for about $600 total for two tickets. Last year I used it to get us to Hawai'i.

In most cases when I can get a good rate for one ticket and then add a companion, I conclude that it's not worth cashing in my FF miles for the same trip. Instead I save the FF miles for a trip off the Alaska network.

You probably didn't because the main hub for Alaskaair is Seattle and Juneau. It flies primarily along the western Canada/US provinces and states. I'm not sure how far east its network extends.

You definitely save with the Alaska companion ticket. We have used it many times already and you don't lose your miles either unless that has changed and I am not aware of it. We love the Alaska card and have flown so often for free already!

They go to Washington D.C. now from LAX and to Maui too. They also fly to NYC from Seattle.

I believe they now fly to all of the major islands from Seattle. If you're interested in Hawai'i travel, the Alaska Airlines VISA is worth checking into for the companion ticket and the FF miles. The do serve various locations on the East Coast, and even if you're on the East Coast a Hawai'it ticket should have the same companion fare eligibility.

Thanks for all the responses. I live in Central IL, so fly from Peoria or Chicago. I think I will return the CC offer and see how the companion ticket works for me
