  • Delta Sky Miles

I possess two credit cards an american Express and a master card.

I have 123.000 points which I thought would cover 4 tickets to Mexico from Miami, ft lauderdale. Last year I used around 35.000 per ticket and paid over 400 dollars in taxes.

I just got off the phone with Delta sky miles and they want 105.000 per tickets due to rules changes.

I was going to the nearest bar for a few drinks but after I post this will go to Starbucks for a tea latte.

Can anyone suggest what should I do with these sky miles. Can I buy something and is there any other credit card out there that has fair practices. I need to go to Mexico every year.

WOW! My hubby and I were discussing today if we should keep our AMEX miles card for $160.00 per year, or go with a regular AMEX card for $0 per year.

The credit card is not the problem. DL went to a three tier system for award tickets that is a real ripoff. Unfortunately, they are taking over NW, too, and so NW miles are also impacted. If you are trying to originate outside the US, it gets worse with a $200+ ''foreign origination fee'' on award tickets. You need to move to a different airline like AA, CO, or UA. Personally, I am comping my elite status from NW to CO. There is one problem with Amex, in that they have ended the ''always double miles'' for lots of categories, which used to be one of the best things about that airline card. Even if they still had ''always double miles'', DL has jerked their members around (and unfortunately that includes NW, as well) that it would still not be worth it.

Have you looked up the cash cost of those tickets? With Amex, you can use ''pay with miles'' and although it is a bad rate, DL generally is so bad these days, it may still be worth it just to burn the DL miles.

I would suggest going to the travel links on this site and look up other airlines ff programs and pick one. AA and CO have generally been pretty upfront with members, and UA as well. DL and US have a history of program changes that negatively impact members in a big way. You might look at Save SkyMiles! for the last big fight with passengers at that airline. That was when I comped from DL to NW.
