  • Ushuaia, Argentina - Getting to/from & visting

We are researching getting to/from and maybe staying a week or so in Ushuaia, Argentina. It is at the Southern Tip of Argentina above the Drake Passage.

My husband saw a Discovery TV program on Quark Expeditions's Kapitan Khlebnikov. Quark Expeditions - Our Fleet - Kapitan Khlebnikov "A polar-class icebreaker, combining power and technology with creature comforts. Originally designed for the rigors of northern Siberia, Kapitan Khlebnikov is one of a few vessels of its kind in the world."

We are looking at the October 10-23, 2009 or October 22-November 4, 2009 cruises for 14 days. The timing is supposedly so good to see the penquin rookery (baby penguins) at Snow Hill that the BBC will have a film crew onboard.

We have confirmed reservations for Club Bali Hai in Moorea, French Polynesia for November 7 - December 5. Papeete, Tahiti is 17 miles away and is the closest air or sea port.

We would depart from SFO/OAK or Sacramento's airport.

Then we could stop over in Mexico/South America but not necessarily. Or take a cruise South.

Then get to Ushuaia, Argentina for the RT Antarctica cruise, then get to Tahiti via air or cruise.

I am not sure if RTW (round the world) airfares might make sense as after Tahiti we might head up to Hawaii then on a cruise west bound to Rome where we could disembark a few places like Bejing for a quick land tour rejoining the ship at Hong Kong or Vietnam and again perhaps in Egypt. Then the RTW fare should get us from Rome - SFO. The rules regarding backtracking & direction on RTW fares seem so complicated.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Not a tremendous help but I did see something about where to stay and how they got there on the FlyerTalk - The world's most popular frequent flyer community South America forum.
