How do you try to prevent sea sickness on cruises?

  • #2
On most larger cruise ships, they have mechanical stabilizers, which minimize the motion of the vessel so the majority of people actually develop no seasickness while on board. That said, some do. There are several over-the-counter meds for motion sickness that work fairly well, as long as you're not vomiting them up. Many cruise ship doctors also have some injectable medication that they'll use if you're particularly sick. If you like natural options, ginger root or supplements are pretty good at cutting nausea. But, in my book, if you really want to be safe, schedule a brief visit with your doctor before leaving and get a prescription for a scopolamine patch. This can be placed behind your ear and prevents motion sickness for up to three days. Some elderly folks have difficulty with it, though, so be sure your traveling companions know you're using it in case you start to act a little odd. (That's why you need a prescription for it, so that you doctor can discuss what to expect if you don't react well to it.)

        children.

We've been on a few cruises, including a transatlantic. I see people wearing the bands with the balls in them for pressure quite a bit. They say it works. If you do encounter rough seas be sure to stay low and go to an area with big windows. Not so much for the view lol!!! as so that you don't get that cabinitis thing where all you can do is focus on your tummy.

I just picked up the sea bands, and also found something called Motioneaze, supposed to be safe for kids, natural product applied behind the ears. Claims to work within 5 minutes even if applied after sickness begins..

got them at a local Marine supply store.

My wife has been using the Sea Bands for nausea from being pregnant. They have been helping. You can pick them up at any Wal-Mart and they are medicine free. She bought them off of a recommendation from another woman who was pregnant.

They do work (not just for sea sickness)!

FYI - the last Western Caribbean cruise I was on was so smooth unless you looked out over the edge of the boat you couldn't even tell you were on water.

Scoplolamine is a prescription drug. You're doctor will tell you if they're all right for children. Personally, I don't think I'd consider putting them on a child.

There are side affects to scopolamine. The two I see the most are blurred vision and dry mouth. My wife cuts her patch in half which cuts the side affects to a tolerable level for her. With an entire patch I have to read the menu's to her and she will always need a piece of hard candy in her mouth. She wears them because nothing else really works for her.

The accupressure bands work surprisingly well. DH can get seasick on a carousel but not a worry on boats with these.

I think I got them at Duane Reed drugstore,

Scopolamine patches aren't approved for use in children. That said, I might use one for an older, larger child (15+). There are multiple over-the-counter agents that are fairly safe in children, but wouldn't be a bad choice to run past a doctor or pharmacist to be sure.
