A Flyertalker reading a Delta financial report found a reference to a new international baggage fee Delta is impose on its international passengers starting for flights after July 1, 2009. In usual Delta style, this was announced in financial reports but has not been announced to passengers yet. The new fee will be $50 for a second checked bag on trans-oceanic flights. Two checked bags are now allowed free. NW, now controlled by DL and marching in lockstep on most things, has just put this new fee up on its website. At least they are still notifying customers.
As usual with Delta, it is all about fees, and also as usual, they are leading the race to the bottom in terms of customer service. We will see how long it takes others to copy. Before their takeover by Delta, it was often Northwest that put a stop to the spread of Delta's anti-customer policies by announcing they would not be going along. Now they are no longer independent to play that role. I suspect within 18 months all airlines will be following Delta's lead.
