  • AA now allowing one way award redemptions for half the miles

Kudos to AA. While other airlines, notably DL/NW, are gutting their ff programs, AA has gone the other direction and made their program much more customer friendly.

Now, they are allowing one way award redemptions for half the miles. Previously (and still with all other US-based airlines) to book a one way award ticket you had to give full miles for a round trip. This is a huge step forward for AAdvantage, and it also applies to award bookings on their partners..

I have always liked BMI's Diamond Club ff program, which I have miles in for just this reason. I am doing a one way back from Vienna using their partner Austrian in a couple of months for half the miles of a round trip.

As a NW refugee after the DL takeover, I would have seriously thought about moving to AA if I had known this at the time (in spite of their very crappy major TATL gateways - JFK and Heathrow). I just hope that my new airline, CO, follows suit.

Wow, this is good news.....this has always annoyed me because there are times when I really wanted to only do one leg of European travel with AA.

    Thanks for posting this info.

Nice option for Europe. I'm going to look into this, thanks Carolinian.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Thanks for the news. We've contemplated a transAtlantic cruise, but didn't want to use the miles for a round trip airline ticket.

For oneway intra-Europe, that is now 10K miles on AA and its OneWorld partners, not quite as good as a oneway intra-Europe with BMI and its *A partners, but still not too shabby. Might be useful, where one leg doesn't work out with an LCC or I can't find anything with *A. BMI award redemptions intra-Europe one way are either 4500 miles or 6000 miles. My last BMI redemption oneway intra-Europe was on their partner Austrian Airlines for a ticket that would have cost over $600 to purchase but I booked with 6000 BMI Diamond Club miles. While the AA deal is good compared to other US-based carriers, it still does not touch BMI and Diamond Club.

In contrast, most US-based airlines would require either 20K or 25K, the full trip trip amount for those oneway tickets. NW, since its takeover by DL, deceptively prices it at 12.5K, 20K, or 30K but you half to look at the fine print to see that this is half of a required R/T amount so that it is really 25K, 30K, or 60K. At least prior to the DL takeover, that deceptive pricing was not there. My 6K BMI ticket might have cost me up to 60K with DL/NW's ripoff 3 tier award chart.
