Due to the recession, the rental car companies have reduced their fleets and the reduced quantity of rentals actually increases their cost on a rental by rental basis. No surprise that rates have gone up.

No more worrying about if the code we use will work.

I need a car for 4 days in S Cal. I tried Priceline and failed a few times. I actually found a good deal but just check out the pricing disparity. These are the per day rates. The big guys certainly don't want my business!

If it doesn't get any better we'll have to hire Rapmarks or Conchman to chauffer us around.

All the talk on flyertalk is about high prices and gouging, etc. No one seems to have any contract ids or coupon codes worth a dang.

I thought it was just where I am going in December but I was shocked when I tried to reserve a car in Malaga. $300 to $500 for 2 measly days in Marbella so I guess I'll be using the bus.

                      Orlando Rental Cars

Where have you gotten the best price for rental cars on or off airport in the Orlando area? We are going to need one around Thanksgiving and can do a 4 day or week rental. We staying near Disney World and will have one car, but will need a second one.

Based on my recent Florida searches, and the lack of any assistance here or on flytertalk, I think we are stuck with hotwire and priceline.

With hotwire you can see the price before confirming. In order to name your own price on priceline you have to accept what you get if you win the bid.

Have you googled Orlando rental cars?

I'm up to $30/day, $530 for 13 days, and not getting anything through Priceline.

                          Hotwire is at $617.

I checked on adding a rental car through Allegiant, our plane carrier. Their reply was to search through Alamo, then call Allegiant, and expect to wait a long time.

I did . . . searched Alamo . . . which appears to be the same as National, and the rates were the same astronomical ones as through National.

                              Minivan

Alamo, with prepay discount, but not signed up: Pre-Pay Total $1,425.76

National, without Emerald Club: Estimated Total $1,580.36

National, Emerald Club: Estimated Total $1,410.37

The Pre-Pay discount with Alamo is essentially the same as the Emerald Club discount with National, but it is exact the same form and gross prices.

The exact same rental last year on the code that was going around was $357.54, and after my time in the penalty box, they let me have it for $462.98. I'm looking at that receipt.

Here is what is new this year, the Extra Time and Distance charge, doubling the total:

                              (1) Time & Distance ($699.95/Week) $699.95
                              (6) Extra - Time & Distance ($99.99/Day) $599.94

I have signed up with Enterprise, to see what that does, and it was very high too.

It makes the $617, if that is for real, through Hotwire look pretty good.
