Mexico and Canada were both a lot easier to travel into and out of for US citizens when I was younger; I visited both of them for a few days without a passport. Don't think you can get away with that anymore. So in that sense they're a lot more foreign now.
That is because of enhanced security and is not unique to Canada and Mexico. Actually the passport requirement was imposed by the US.
