I just spoke with a lady who was almost taken by another version of the Mexican resale scam.. She believed she was selling her Mayan Palace membership via a resale broker, and that the contract called for the seller to pay the resort transfer fee. She received contracts, and was referred to a "closing company" allegedly using the name Alliance Title Service.
On her closing statement, she received instructions to submit payment for the transfer fee to Promotora Costa Diamante. She later discovered that company had no affiliation with Mayan Palace..
(Often with the Mexican resales the transfer fee is made payable to a company name that differs from the resort)..
If you are involved in a Mexican resale- remember the following:
1) Confirm the transfer info and requirements with your resort. Do not simply trust the reseller or the closing agent.
2) If there are seller proceeds expected from the sale, all seller costs should be deducted from those proceeds- you do not bring cash to closing unless you know you are upside down on the transaction.
