  • Never buy a timeshare from Wyndham

    As part of a cruise package, we were told we would receive a free 3 day, 2 night package to stay at certain locations in the US. We booked the package and followed all of the rules, but were unaware that when we arrived to check-in that we would have to attend a timeshare sales demo. It was never mentioned on the package or by any of the representatives that booked the package.

    My husband was interested in hearing what they had to say so we did end up going to the sales presentation. What a mistake!!! It ruined our whole vacation!!!! After hearing the cost and sitting through not 90 minutes of the presentation like they stated, but over 3 hours. We insisted that they let us leave and we weren't ready to buy right now. At this point the sales people became nasty. They kept saying we just had to talk with one more person, or wait another 5 minutes, and then they started making threats. They wouldn't give us the paperwork to checkout of our hotel (but I already had this). So then they said they would call our hotel and tell them to check us out and that we would have to pay for the hotel (which was a dump that we would have never stayed at if we were paying). They finally let us leave when we both were very upset. We left the place, checked out of the hotel a day early and returned home. Our whole vacation was ruined!! We drove home that evening (a 6 hour drive) and WE WILL NEVER BUY A TIMESHARE FROM WYNDHAM (which we were considering until they became so nasty). I was in tears after how nasty and rude they became. I had no idea what we were in for and would never attend another timeshare presentation. We did receive some cash and another 3 day 2 night package for attending but it was not worth the money, hotel stay, or time to deal with these people. It was a horrible nightmare. If I would have had any idea the 2 night package was a timeshare scam we never would have used it in the first place.

    Plus at the end of the presentation they refused to let us fill out the normal comment papers, because they knew how upset we were.

    If it were me, I would get in touch with the appropriate head of the sales department and report this to them. I suspect that they do not want this kind of result. Timeshare presentations are no doubt a very hard sale. It sounds like your went over the top by a lot. I would report it.

      Now look for resales

      You were lucky to get out without paying the horribly inflated developer price for the very fine Wyndham system. After you cool down take a look around at how inexpensively you can purchase Wyndham Points on resale and not have to deal with the obnoxious sales process. Besides saving up to 80% or more on the purchase price you are getting into one of the best multi-resort systems and avoiding the high pressure sales. The points spend the same if you pay $.15 or $.01 so the value is always in resale purchase never with the retail.

      I'm sorry your specific vacation plans on that trip were spoiled but in the long run it was for the best.

        Next time, bring a copy of the Real Estate Commission complaint form for the state in which the timeshare is being sold.

        Tell them upfront that the only reason you are there is that you want the free gift they offered for your time. Furthermore, tell them that you have no intention of buying and you are setting your watch to denote the 90-minute mark.

        Pull out the form and tell them before he talks, you would like to take care of some preliminary business. Ask him or her their name and the Real Estate License number. Leave that form blank on the table in front of you.

        That will result in a very short presentation and no hanky panky.

          Sounds as if timeshare presentations haven't changed much over the last twenty years or so.
          A friend of mine that sold timeshares for a brief time said, " there's nothing wrong with timeshares except the way that they are presented." He got out after seeing how customers were being beat up.

            Our average "90 minute" presentaion takes 2.5 hours. My DW & I love looking at all the different systems and resorts. And other than our first TS, have always found a way to say "no". The stories about nasty salemen are something we have never had to deal with.

            Since you should be buying resale anyway, you need not deal with TS salemen in the furture.

                Welcome to the world of timesharing and TS4M's......when you cool off check out how most of use timeshares to the fullest advantage. One can really make the system work for great vacations at a really great cost.

                I have never purchased from the developer...I have purchased all re-sales....and I have been through several developer sales presentations. Some were good and some were nasty. Bottom line is I usually learned a great amount of information which helped me decide what I wanted to buy on the resale market. When I wasn't getting the information I wanted and/or they became nasty I would push right back and they would get me out of there in a hurry...gift in hand.

                Explore timeshareforums.com and learn how to use the system. Then you can change your name to 'a salesperson made me so mad I found TS4M's and learned how to save thousands and use the system to my advantage'.

                  It has been a very long while since we have been to a timeshare presentation. This sounds like a great way to make sure things do not get out of hand.

                  However, I doubt it would work in Mexico...

                    Something like that would certainly ruin anyone's vacation. I'm not real good with threats that one can't legaly follow through with but I am pretty good at handling them. Cell phones are lovely things and dialing information for the appropriate phone numbers to lodge complaints should put the breaks on any problems with getting out after 90 minutes.

                    Should you ever take such an offer again, make sure to point out the 90 minute limit and what time it is right then. At 90 minutes politely tell them your time is up, rise out of that chair and start walking. Should they threaten you, pull out that cell phone and dial information.

                      Yes, please report this

                      We are very happy Fairfield/Wyn owners but we will never attend another presentaiton either because of how we we treated at Las Vegas Grand Desert by a salesman there. Please go ahead and report this to the sales manager at the resort you were at in the hopes that this salesman will be FIRED!

                        Fired? Heck, they might give the salesman an attaboy award. He's successfully eleminated this couple from the "I want the free gift pool of prospects" forever. I don't think they have to worry about them ever attending another presentation for cheap hotel accomadations or free gifts.

                        IMO, it's better to file complaints with whatever athority oversee's their sales activity. If enough complaints get filed THEN maybe something, or someone, will change (get fired).

                          These types of nasty experiences continue to put people off from timesharing. Why would anyone buy after such an experience ? Should I ever run into such an experience again, I would certainly get nasty and loud and talk about resale prices very loudly. This might curtail the presentation and give them something to think about should they lose a whole group of prospects as a result.
                          I sure wish I could get my Mrs. to go on one particular "revenge tour" I have in mind.

                              The best revenge is in buying resale. I see really great points packages all the time on the resale websites and ebay, too. The best revenge is education and doing the exact opposite of what the salesperson was trying to get you to do.
