I tend not to talk people out of buying- it seems to do no good - they seem to think the sales pitch was the real truth.

Sometimes I laugh when I see the timeshare sales people. Many of them that are hired guns that just show up for a few appointments and leave. Have full time jobs. They are smooth cocky. In Nuevo Vallarta there is a doctor who sells timeshares for the Mayan. I've been told the commission is very high for each sale. Buff/Scott

I almost never metion resale when we're on vacation at a timeshare resort. If it's a new purchase and they're new to timeshare and excited about it then I'm happy as clam for them. Plus, why do I want to interfer with a salesmans ability to earn a living? I know I'd be ticked off if strangers made came into my place of employment and talked smack about me.Our timeshare and other photo's at http://dougp26364.smugmug.com/

I laid out the facts to a young couple at the Marina El Cid swimming pool on one of my first trades. They were grateful and certainly could not have afforded to pay full price for the unit, only to find out it's worth less than $2k resale. Other than that, I have tended to keep my mouth shut unless specifically asked.
After all, someone has to buy all of those $20k+ new units in order to keep the developers building, so that we have great and new places into which to trade.

On the other hand, perhaps more would buy if the prices were more realistic and the salespeople would not have to profit as much from each sale. Maybe it would be a wash.

If someone starts to talk to me, asks me questions. I will answer honestly. My last encounter was at Westgate Vacation Villas. Told him to look at ebay on any given day and see what they are selling for (disregard the 5,000 -10,000 listing by power people). I also will tell them that I bought my first one from Westgate and I paid $6K for a 2 bedroom and that was my worst purchase of all my timeshares. However, I do add that timesharing is great and wonderful, if you learn how to use your timeshare and the only thing that salespeople say that is the truth is that it will make you vacation (if you take the time to learn).
I wouldnt have such a problem with developers if they would teach thier sales staff or other employees how to educate the buyers after they bought. Say for example, when I would go back to Westgate the next year, if instead of saying "You need to come to a maintenance meeting" and infact it is another salesmeeting wanting me to upgrade or buy another week. They spend time answering questions about how to use my timeshare better. How to get good trades. I guess thats rather dreaming, cant make any money off that but might get more referrals.
