  • Hertz Rental Car

On my recent trip to Italy I rented through some consolidator whose name I got here or OY. The ultimate contract was with Hertz. Although I do have a #1 Club membership, Hertz would not allow me to put that number on the Hertz reservation when received. This meant I waited 1.5 hours to get my car rental at Rome airport.

I did a week to the North and then a week in Rome so I had the car rented for 8 days. While getting the car, I asked if I could turn it in at the train station, sure, no problem.

Refueled outside of Rome on the return, but by the time I got to the RHC hotel/timeshare it showed a tad below 'F.' So, on the way to the train station which was about 8 blocks I got more gas at the only pump around, one of those tiny one pump stations on the side of the street 4 blocks from the garage where Hertz was. It was one of those places where you had to put in a specific amount by feeding in a minimum sized bill.... well, the attendant looked at me as if I were crazy when the tank only took half the amount that I had coming to me.

Turned in the car. Next I checked my credit card, I had a charge from Hertz for 29.74euros; dumb me, figured they hit me with a drop off charge.

Then a month later I get a copy of the bill from Hertz Italy charging me 9.79euros for carburante, 15euro for servizio carburante, and 4.95euros VAT. I was fuming.

Sent emails to customer service here and there. They take many many days to answer and tell me that my tank was at 7/8ths, submit receipts to prove it was fueled, yeah right. Several emails back and forth over two weeks telling them that I am in their #1 Club and check the records, I've never returned an un-full car. They demand a receipt. Damn receipt would not have shown that the tank was full or not!

I finally responded that this was not what I bargained for when I had a contract with Hertz. I would contest the charge with my credit card and I'm sure the time spent on my emails and with VISA would add up to more than 29.74euros.

Finally they say that I must have a receipt but that they will give me a one time good will adjustment of 29.74euros.

Moral, even when you've been renting cars and returning them full for 41 years, there are still those rental car operations who will try to take advantage of you, so keep your last gas receipt.
... not enough time for all the timeshares ®

And make sure the gas receipt has the location so they know that you filled up only XX miles from the car drop off location.

      Hi Spence

I would love to hear more about your Italy trip.

We 0rented from Enterprise Rent a Car in Southampton, England in April. They gave us the car with less than 1/8 tank of gas. We returned at the Enterprise location closest to the Irish Ferries. My first comment was to ask the employee checking me in to check that there would be no fuel charge. Because if he thought I was returning with less than when I rented, I had time to fill it up. He said "No problem. There will be no fuel charge.'

I next asked for a copy of the check in paperwork and he said "I faxed it to Southampton. When you drop off at a different location we don't give you the final bill."

I got him to sign acknowledgement that of when the car was returned.

The drop charge was 50 pounds ($100). Sure enough when I got the bill they added a fuel charge - I think at least $25.

I called American Express and they waived the charge immediately. I never had to contact enterprise.

When we arrived back in SFO, I took the shuttle to the new car rental facility. People were complaining endlessly about the line. I didn't realize I didn't need to wait in line probably because of my Hertz No 1 club card. We dropped off the car near home and mentioned it took 1 1/2 to get to the counter because only 2 employees were at the counter. The local Hertz manager gave me a $100 credit voucher for our next rental.

I have seen recent ads by Hertz with a guarantee about wait times and offer of credit if it exceeds the limit.

Hertz in New Orleans tried a similar scam, but fortunately I had saved the receipt of the fill up at a station right by the drop off location, so they did remove the charge. Ever since that incident, I always make sure that I save that last gas receipt until the final charge amount for the car appears on my card.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with your last Hertz car rental. I rented a car directly through Hertz in Germany a few years ago, and the guy at the rental counter made a change on the rental agreement in my favor. The actual Visa charge didn't show that, so I phoned Hertz, faxed a copy of the changed rental agreement, and had no problem getting a credit from Hertz.

Hopefully, your next rental with Hertz will work out better again.
