On my recent trip to Italy I rented through some consolidator whose name I got here or OY. The ultimate contract was with Hertz. Although I do have a #1 Club membership, Hertz would not allow me to put that number on the Hertz reservation when received. This meant I waited 1.5 hours to get my car rental at Rome airport.
I did a week to the North and then a week in Rome so I had the car rented for 8 days. While getting the car, I asked if I could turn it in at the train station, sure, no problem.
Refueled outside of Rome on the return, but by the time I got to the RHC hotel/timeshare it showed a tad below 'F.' So, on the way to the train station which was about 8 blocks I got more gas at the only pump around, one of those tiny one pump stations on the side of the street 4 blocks from the garage where Hertz was. It was one of those places where you had to put in a specific amount by feeding in a minimum sized bill.... well, the attendant looked at me as if I were crazy when the tank only took half the amount that I had coming to me.
Turned in the car. Next I checked my credit card, I had a charge from Hertz for 29.74euros; dumb me, figured they hit me with a drop off charge.
Then a month later I get a copy of the bill from Hertz Italy charging me 9.79euros for carburante, 15euro for servizio carburante, and 4.95euros VAT. I was fuming.
Sent emails to customer service here and there. They take many many days to answer and tell me that my tank was at 7/8ths, submit receipts to prove it was fueled, yeah right. Several emails back and forth over two weeks telling them that I am in their #1 Club and check the records, I've never returned an un-full car. They demand a receipt. Damn receipt would not have shown that the tank was full or not!
I finally responded that this was not what I bargained for when I had a contract with Hertz. I would contest the charge with my credit card and I'm sure the time spent on my emails and with VISA would add up to more than 29.74euros.
Finally they say that I must have a receipt but that they will give me a one time good will adjustment of 29.74euros.
Moral, even when you've been renting cars and returning them full for 41 years, there are still those rental car operations who will try to take advantage of you, so keep your last gas receipt.
