Man Says Resort Fined Him $4K Over His Shirt - News Story - WFTV Orlando
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Central Florida timeshare owner says he's been fined $4,000 over a t-shirt. Ray Nix was upset with an extra charge to move his vacation from Westgate Resort in Orlando so he made a t-shirt that read, "Westgate ripped me off."
"I mean, they ripped me off, man," Nix said.
Nix says he wants everyone to know he got a raw deal when he paid $15,000 for a timeshare at the Westgate Lakes Resort in Orlando.
"It really upsets me, man," he said.
Nix says the company didn't make good on a promise that he could trade his time to stay at another resort in Park City, Utah for little or no extra charge, but then things only got worse.
Believe it or not, this war of words all started over a t-shirt, which reads, "Westgate ripped me off." But when Nix wore it to breakfast at the resort, he had no idea how much trouble it would cause.
"The security surrounded me when they saw me with my t-shirt on at the pool. They told me they could charge me $1,000 a day for wearing my t-shirt on the property," Nix said.
Nix took off his shirt and moved his protest to the street corner, but he says the resort still hit him with a $4,000 fine for the violation. Resort managers insist Nix's free speech was a violation of their covenants and cost them new business.
However, Nix, a day trader from Georgia, made a special trip back to Orlando to continue his protest and says he has no plans to pay the $4,000 bill.
"No sir. It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever did that," he said.
Westgate Resorts promotes itself as the largest privately held company in Central Florida, with more than 400,000 timeshare owners.
