  • Tired with the fees

This might be unrelated. But I really do need some ideas to get out from my timeshare. My mistake, in 2007 I bought a week (A WEEK, not a resort) directly from the developer and cost me $14000++; I felt lucky at that time because they said that the market price was at least $18-28K (for a "5-star" resort, on week 51 (Christmas week); and I believed it. But after observing the web market, nobody want to buy this kind of junk, unless I am willing to sell it for less than $2000. I was so dumb, but isn't it "fraud in the inducement"?

Anyway, I realized my mistake about 3 weeks after I bought it, but they cannot cancel cause it's over 2 weeks; and I started to find out how to get out of this. And, I made another dumb decision, I hired a resale website to help me sell, SellMyTimeshareNOW. They promised me to sell within 90 days. And they said if they can't sell and somebody else can, they they'll return my money. I thought this will work; NO result from them.

So, I decide to hire another web seller thinking I might get my money back BuyATimeshare. Both of them could not sell it even untill now (4 years later). So my effort speding another $1000++ to sell my timeshare is prettymuch useless.

And the maintenance fees is going up all the time. It's really hard to use it with the current economy, cause my friends doesn't want to pay a lot of $$ just to enjoy one resort. If they are willing to travel, they will rather stay in a decent motel and move around: 2 days here, 2 days there, 2 days in another place. This is really2 frustrating.

Any suggestions to sell my week timeshare will be greatly appreciated.

You made a mistake. We all do it. You just have to move on and make the best of it.

There are some programs that allow shorter than a week stays. It's hard to plan a "move around" type of vacation, but it's doable.

Don't let the disappointment that you paid too much keep you from trying to enjoy what you own. Most of us here are owners who love to travel with our timeshares.

Granted, I paid more for my ten weeks of timeshare than I would in today's economy, but I love them all. Need to get rid of a couple just because I don't get enough vacation time, but it's hard to decide which ones to let go. They've all served me well in various ways. Some I use. Some I trade.

Retail sellers make it sound so great but somehow "forget" about those pesky, and most decidedly NOT prepaid annual fees, when talking you into the purchase. Oh, and virtually anything they say doesn't count - only what you sign.

You aren't going to beat them on the purchase, you aren't going to prove fraud so look at your real options now. You already learned that the "sellers' are interested only in the upfront fees they can get from you as any potential commissions are not worth the effort.

So now you can use the time - the best value - rent it, not easy but if it is a Christmas week you have at least a fighting chance of getting back the annual fee, or sell it privately/give it away. Remember too that anyone looking for money "to take it off your hands" is yet another rip off. Don't fall for one of those too.

The money you paid for the timeshare and the scam resellers is long gone. Accept that and move on with the best choice for what you have now. Good luck.

You might try an ad in our classifieds or a give away post in our freebie forum. Watch out for the donation groups too--as they are also looking for a cash "donation" to go along with most timeshare weeks.

I agree with trying to rent it out. Giving it away will take it off of your hands, but if you are able to rent it or sell it you won't be totally out of the hole as far as money is concerned. Also, self-advertising never hurts. Get the word out about your property using various sites. The internet is full of websites and forums that you can advertise your timeshare on. Include some pictures of the resort and all the "perks" that come along with it. Try not to say how tired you are of the fees, because in all essence, you really want someone to want the timeshare enough to possibly rent it or buy it from you! Good luck!

Thank you for the input. I think i might try to use it first at least for the next couple years before paying broker closing fees etc.

The web market is by far the most depressed part of the timeshare resale market, particularly eBay, which is now the bargain basement of timeshare. If there are sales outlets in the local catchment area of timeshare's location, that is usually a better bet and brings better prices. By catchment area, I mean the zone in which it is feasible to drive to the timeshare to use it.

Good for you. The best value in any timeshare is actually using it. After you stay at that resort a few times, you might also start looking into exchanging it---depending on what it is, and where it is of course.

Steve is right though---the timeshare market is notoriously inefficient, and different "pockets" don't necessarily reflect each others' prices. It's not always easy to find the right pocket into which to sell, and it can be a lot of work, but it can be done.
