ARDA warns of fraudulent practices

The American Resort Development Association has made Disney Vacation Club® aware of a fraudulent marketing practice targeting consumers over maintenance fee billings.

Members should use caution if they are solicited by a company claiming to work on behalf of an association collecting overdue maintenance fees due to billing errors or an unexpected special assessment. Contact Disney Vacation Club to be certain that such a bill is legitimate before paying.

Such scams happen and there are other variants. One resort manager on the OBX ~20 years ago set up her own bank account in the HOA's name and diverted some m/f checks there. When the HOA treasurer got suspicious, she quit and soon found a job at another timeshare off the OBX and started doing the same thing. She was prosecuted and went to jail, but I do not think either HOA ever recovered their money.
