  • For most I would say keep/own just what you use and sell the rest. We told the parents 15 years ago when they updated the will that we don’t want the Timeshares, reminded them 10 years ago that we don’t want them, a year after dad died we tried to get mom to sell them. I’m thank full that they have enough cash to float the Timeshares and the assisted living facility but I can say is stinks to write out all the checks for the MF fees (we write all the checks). The timeshares are going to get hit hard this next year and sold with any luck.

The sad part about this is they sat empty for most part of the last 10 years. I think they were holding on to the Timeshares thinking the kids may change their minds and want them.

    If parents would just listen

      • Actually dealing with it:

"Many RDO members already did but by the end of 2012, all RDO members were required to have some form of an exit programme* in place, and, additionally, any deserving cases – for example due to ill health or old age – had to be dealt with swiftly and sympathetically. Going one step further, the RDO Board has since required members to allow exit in the case of the death of an owner whose spouse or family does not wish to keep the timeshare and also in the event of the personal bankruptcy of an owner.

At the start of this year and as part of its ongoing policy to protect owners, the Board approved a policy that requires members to register weeks taken in as trade-ins in their own name, thereby ensuring the owner is not left liable for payment of the maintenance fees."

". . . owners are also joining RDO member “exit clubs” in increasing numbers, these clubs allow owners to continue to enjoy their holidays, but exit form (sic) the club after a set period, with no further obligations."

        • On another vacation and travel forum I am getting some interest, as opposed to absolutely no interest, by offering our weeks as an inexpensive way to get into RCI, for access to Extra Vacations and Last Calls. People on that forum recognize the value of 2-bedroom resort condos of $300/week.

So, the deal is they get our week for free, get a $350 annual fee, have a week at that resort to use, trade, rent themselves, or rent through the resort's rental program, and have access to Extra Vacations and Last Calls.

If they deposit the owned week in Weeks, and use it for discounted exchanges, they could get up 4 exchanges at the regular exchange fee.

For a frequent traveler, it can't get much better than that.

If you know anyone who is not in RCI and would like to be, let them know.

          Thanks.

This is proving to be a good strategy. It's only good if you have a low maintenance fee.

Thinking back, we used 5 or 6 weeks a years while traveling on business, so that would make it worthwhile.

Another idea I am going to try is to contact those I have rented our owned weeks to.

RCI currently has a special on with more than 11000 weeks available for $209, so occasionally it gets even better than Last Calls.

Well, here's a familiar result for the latest effort:

"I would like to rent from you but as far as owing a timeshare, even though it is given to me, I don't want to do. I have researched and been told too many horror stories. I appreciate your generosity. Sorry I have wasted your time."

                            • Well, anyway, it says something other than "it is a good deal for timeshare owners/RCI members" when exchanges go for 4 points and people who don't own a TS can get them for $209, no deposit required.

                              yeah, I know, old news
