  • Timeshare advantages which make economic sense!

We had never taken advantage of booking an II getaway special until today and we saved a lot of money.

    II "getaways"

We have two sets of free tickets with Alaska Airlines to anywhere they fly to so need to think about using them. A few TUGgers told me that we would never be able to use these bonus tickets so my DH called Alaska today and asked what was available late October or the two weeks before Thanksgiving to Puerto Vallarta as that should be a very quiet time for traveling and timeshare weeks may also be available. Alaska gave us two dates but the October date was the day we would come back from one of our other timeshares so he booked November 26.

I quickly checked RCI "Last Call" but all they had available were mainly mandatory A-I resorts and I checked some rental web pages but had to find out if they could get us our dates which takes time. My DH wanted to stay at Paradise Village so he was in the process of booking reservations directly with the resort and that would have been around $750 for the week.

I asked him if I could try a Getaway special with II. I did it on the phone and got a week for $299 for a 1 br unit for the exact week we needed. If I had done it online, I would have saved another $30!

We were not going to renew II but booking such a nice travel deal may make us change our mind so we can do this more often as it makes economic sense to me now.

PS. They had a 2 br condo available for $369 online.

    Emmy,

I'm glad you were able to take advantage of a Getaway. They are often overlooked b/c overall the prices have gone way up, but for fall and some spring weeks (depending on destination), there are some great deals.

Sounds like a fun trip, and the price is right!

That advantage is also there with independent exchange companies. A timeshare owner can join DAE free, for example, and then have access to bonus weeks, which are last when rentals which no member took as an exchange. The prices for those are quite good.

Carolinian, can you join them even if you don't own a timeshare? That would be great for my family and friends to know about in Europe. TIA.

As I understand it,to join DAE, you have to either 1) own a non-timeshare rental property, pre-pay an exchange fee, and deposit a week, or 2) own a timeshare (for timeshare owners there is no need to pre-pay an exchange fee or make a deposit). But Marc would be a better one to answer this qauestion.

                D can also = Darling

though sometimes it may = Darn or Dang

Personally, I'd prefer a more general SO (Significant Other)...

                      Nice Emmy.

We also took advantage of my bothers II membership since he is with Marriott. We got the Marriott Grand Vista getaway for about $300 for a conference she attended nearby at the JW Marriott and Ritz. They wanted that per night at the conference location. We love timeshares.
