    MSHATTY,

Thanks for the confirmation. I am a member of the FFHOA web site; however, I find the posts confusing and hard to track. When one rents points from another member, how are the points deposited into one's account.

      Tom:

The owner get the renter's account # and call FF VC told them to transfer X amount of points. That is it. The point has to be regualr use point.

You probably want to spend the 1st retire year to play with exchange with exchange companies and rental from their short term inventories. And play with FF system to see what kind of traveling style you want. Some people like to stay in a place for a while. Some will want to move on to other places in 3 day's stay. At this moment, buying more points may not need. You have plenty if you carefully use it, you may get 4 to 5 month usuage out of it.

I am retired now and when my wife retires in another year or so we will continue to use our 500K Fairfield points for exchanges and for going to Fairfield properties. We will be able to go more short notice then so will be able to maximize our points a little better.
We have really liked most of the places that we have been so will continue to travel similiar to what we have been doing but maybe just more often.
If we purchse any more it will probably be a week or two someplace that we really want to spend time most years.

            Renting FF Points

Does the person from which the points are rented incur a reservation charge to place points into my account?

              Tom,

A transfer of points does count as a "reservation transaction". Depending on the number of points you have and the use of 2007 reservation transactions, it can cost $25 if you have no reservation transactions left for the year. Only Gold VIP and Platinum VIP owners have unlimited reservation transactions. Regular VIP owners do not.

The transaction is charged against the person who is transferring points. If you are receiving the points, you are not charged a reservation transaction.

                For retirement,

Exchanging habits will change. Instead of planning for family vacations to more familiar locations, will look for exotic exchanges throughout the world. Hopeful that retirement includes a good return on my 401K to enjoy retirement.

I currently live in San Diego and plan to retire there.

I have many years before retirement, so it is hard to plan that far ahead. "RAY" who spends 26 straight weeks (through exchanges etc) is my idol. Who know what trading will be like in the future.

I retired in August and DH is semi-retired. There was never a time in our 38 years of marriage when finances allowed us to buy a 2nd home. We didn't take the timeshare plunge until 4 years ago and we now own enough weeks(some EY, some EOY) to spend 6 weeks in a warmer (a relative term) climate in the dead of winter. Using lock-offs would get 2 more weeks for the same MFs. That would be with no exchanges and no plane tickets. If I can afford exchange fees we could stretch our winter escape to 10 or more weeks using ACs & exchanges. Add to that Getaways and bonus time at our Palm Springs and Arizona resorts and we could escape most of the snowiest time up here in the Sierras. We plan to visit Hawaii EOY & if plane fare doesn't get out of reach, my option for warm weather destinations increases.

We are testing our resorts as winter destinations this year. Just got home from 2 weeks in Palm Springs where it was a balmy 68°f until the Cold Wave hit this weekend dropping the mercury to 35°f. Of course at home it was 9°f Everyone's pipes are frozen! As long as we can keep up with the MF for all our weeks in those expensive warm western US locations (and figure out how to winterize our house) we will be Timeshare snowbirds.

Our timeshare portfolio has changed drastically, anticipating my retirement in July 2007. (DH has been retired since 2000.) Prior to August 2006, we owned timeshare in Cocoa Beach (3 weeks), South Africa (4 weeks); 1 week at Kona Coast, 1 week at Pono Kai, and EOY at Maui Schooner. Since August 2006, we sold all SA weeks due the loss in value b/t the rand and doller, escalating maintenance fees, high RCI trading fees, and poor trade ability. To maximize vacation time, we purchased another resale week in Cocoa Beach, and won eBay auctions for (3) 2br weeks at Summer Bay Las Vegas, (1) 1br Pono Kai and (1) 2br Kona Coast week to add to the units we already own. Now we will be able to vacation 5 weeks in Hawaii (even years) or 4 weeks (odd years), 4 weeks in Cocoa Beach and 3 weeks in Las Vegas. In addition to this, we still have deposits and bonus weeks to use with TPI and a banked week with RCI. We should have no problems escaping the cold winter in the north east and still stay close to our children and grandchildren throughout the year. With the extra Hawaii units, we can take family members with us during the summer months. Only 5 months to go, which includes a 2-week vacation in April (Sedona and Vegas) to help me make it through the school year.

I have been 'tweaking' my portfolio with retirement in mind....probably 8 more years for DH

I hope to be able to spend January in Orlando using II accomodation certs...with a quick trip to St Thomas for our week 3.
                          February in Mexico using trades....
March in Aruba using 'owned weeks'.

Right now my weeks using lock-offs are equal to 12 weeks..and I am looking to purchasing locations that if I don't use or exchange, can be rented easily for more then the MFs. Mylast 2 purchases in Ireland and St Thomas fit that equation.

The idea of a second home in a far-away location with maintanance headaches isn't appealing right now.

I would like to also travel in the fall....heck, I just like to travel!

My timeshare plans for retirement are to turn my entire portfolio of timeshares to my children so that they can handle all the issues. I just want to call one of them up and say I want to go somewhere and I want them to get it for me.

We are retired already so our plan is to keep the timeshares we have already but add weeks on once we are there and we will rent them from private parties.

We had a good look around in Maui just before Christmas and long term rentals are out there. Daily or weekly rentals are much more expensive, we found out. Of course, they are not resorts but mainly regular condos but some of them are on the ocean too.
