Actually, Galveston IS on my places-to-visit list. I would love to see our old house there. If it's still there.

I recently posted a thread about my visit to S. Padre Island here.
Of the resorts there, Peninsula Island is a 5 Star II resort.
.:Peninsula Island Resort & Spa:.
It's website shows that it has the granite countertops etc. It is right on the beach and looks very nice from the drive by "appraisal" that I did.
It would be a real catch to snag one of those. The Royal Tennis & Beach Club was right next door and it looks very nice also. The Royal is in both RCI and II.

Originally posted by BoardGirlI was also thinking Silverleaf, as they also have Bonus Time so you could get away for a weekend here and there, and own more than one resort. Take in their presentation since you live near enuf. DON'T BUY THERE! Not sure what the resale vs from the developer does to bennies - that would need research to make sure to go the right way.
We've been making the rounds of the Silverleaf resorts since they are dog friendly (fee is between $50 - 75 for the entire week, no matter how many dogs in your party). SLs always have a ton of things to do, and typically are located a bit off the beaten path (so they give you onsite entertainment). I haven't seen a lot of nickel-and-diming at the resorts themselves - most everything is free.
They may also have day use, which would give you a country-club of sorts near home. If we lived near enuf to one of their resorts, we would buy in.

Bonus time is when the resort has unbooked units, they allow members to "rent "
at reduced rate. From reading ebay ads, I have received the impression that Mon-Thurs bonus time at Silverleaf is free to members. You may want to check that and verify if that is accurate.

I do believe there is some free bonus time for Silverleaf owners, but, I don't own there so it would be pure conjecture. Definitely go visit one of the resorts, get the grand tour, the scoop on owner bennies like BT and the other rules (using resorts that aren't your 'home resort', day use...). Be sure that they take you to see lodge units, not just Presidential. Some of their properties have a lot of different unit types = be nice to see one of each!
It is my understanding that part of Silverleaf's mission is to be the country club resort, bringing your family back frequently because it is so economical to do so. If that truly is the case, that would likely really drop your cost per night.
We'll need to find a Silverleaf Expert that can provide info on whether resale negates any regular owner benefits.

Here's a Silverleaf reseller who has good information on their website:

I know nothing about Texas resorts to add to the above discussion, but wanted to add something applicable to the consideration of costs of timeshares in general. Most timeshares have kitchen facilities which can be a huge savings when traveling on a budget. Even if you just utilize the kitchen for breakfasts and snacks/drinks, esp. when traveling with kids the $$'s add up, to say nothing about the convenience of not having to get everyone up and going to grab breakfast before you're ready to start the day. Even keeping bottles of cold water, soda or other beverages in the frig. and throwing them in a cooler can save quite a bit when you are talking about several people for a week. A dollar here and a dollar or two there really add up. Pack some cold-cuts (or pick them up locally) and make sandwiches for lunch and you can realize a savings equivalent to a good portion of the annual MF's. If you are so-inclined, barbequing even a couple of nights is another huge savings and very relaxing. We like to do that not only for the savings, but even moreso because you tend to overeat eating out night after night and grilling some steaks a few nights with a big salad is a great way to end the day with the family. If money is tight you can opt to eat more dinners in- many people do.
Having a DVD player or VCR in the LR (which many units have) also makes for inexpensive and relaxing evening entertainment. A couple of bags of microwave popcorn and a cheap video rental helps spread the vacation dollars and is a great way for the family to enjoy some relaxation time after a hectic day at the beach, hiking or sightseeing, etc.
Just something else worth factoring in....

Mike I did notice your post about Padre Island resorts and unfortunatly we don't have an II resort anymore so the new one is out. Maybe I could try SFX although I know they don't have any resorts listed for Texas. Would one of the Silverleaf resorts be a good choice for staying inland if we want to golf?

They would probably be fine. What part of the state would you be visiting? If you are in San Antonio area, there are a couple of better choices. If in Austin area, there's the Owners at Barton Creek that shows up once in a while. The "Hill Country" has a Silverleaf.
In the Houston area, there are several golf courses in and around many of the Lake Conroe, Lake Walden resorts. I've heard that the resort at April Sound is a nice.

Silverleaf
The important thing when you buy a silverleaf is to get a red as the bonus time is only good for the color you have and red covers the full year. Do not trust the info in listing on Ebay as I saw them list a week as a red when it was a white. If you go to the silverleaf yahoo group and join there is a place under files that will show yu the weeks and colors. Also if you buy try to get one of the destination units- these allow bonus time at all silverleafs, 2 of the destination ones in Texas is Galveston and Hill Country Canyon Lake. They have a Piney woods one in Conroe but it is classified as a Getaway and so can not use the bonus time in Canyon Lake or Galveston. I am new at it but luckily found the yahoo group and realized one I bought on Ebay was listed wrong, the seller let me back out when he was informed of the error and I then bought a Hill Country Red for $200.00. The bonus time is free Sun-Thurs and $49.00 Sat and Sunday. You can get up to 3 days at a time then have to wait for 7 days to use it again. Your membership includes day use at any of the resorts. They have nice facilities, horseback riding is $15 and most other things are free. The fees are @ $700 a year but with Bonus time it is worth it. You can let someone else use your set week but for bonus time your name has to be on the deed. There can be as many as 6 names on the deed so if you have someone you want to be able to utilize the day facilities or bonus time be sure to add there name. Besides Conroe,Galveston and Canyon Lake there is a couple of silverleafs in Missouri, one in Il. one In Orlando and one in Mass. My friend has had hers for a few years, she used 2 weekends this suimmer bonus time in Orlando which she was surprised to be able to get. Bonus time can only be scheduled 14-21 days ahead ( I think they changed time frame so some deeds read differently) If it is available they will confirm,if not then they will put you on a list and call if they have a cancellation. Double check things with the experts on the yahoo site in case I have any of this wrong but I have been reading heavily since I bid on mine. Best of Luck, Judy

One more TX timeshare
As I recall, the Lodge at Runaway Bay gives some day use privileges to its owners. It is not expensive to buy and the maintenance fees are reasonable, but it is a resort to buy to use rather than to trade. I would not recommend it for folks in Houston, but it might be a good choice for someone in the DFW, Denton or Wichita Falls area.
