  • New guy, old questions probably.

We're on vacation here in Kauai and got $500 off of our whale watching boat tour and helicopter ride to attend a Shell Vacation Club TS seminar. Of the few TS seminars I've been too, this one didn't set off any red flares for me. In the other, I just flat out knew they were going to take me for a ride. This one I just didn't know.

My golden rule is if they throw out the "But you must buy it right now to get this great deal", I walk. They did it here too, but it was hard to walk away from. Especially the wife pulling the Puss-in-Boots look from Shrek2 on me! <grin>

So, we got them to commit to giving us till 9:30am on Jan 2nd to think it over. I'm a quick learner, I just need a push in the right direction. I'm not adverse to reading up on the subject, so if there's already some well written stuff out there, please shoot me to it. I'll gladly read it provided I can understand it! :-)

So here's the deal they have on the table.

    Shell Vacations Club

4,550 points per year which apparently covers a two bedroom.

Can bank points for up to four years.

Can buy/rent points (more on this in a bit)

Can exchange on the RCI properties

"Mini-vacations" which is like three bedroom cottages for $250 or so for the entire week stay.

Can use points for just about anything. Massages, plane fare, car rental etc.

Only have to deal with the Shell folks. i.e. I call their 1-877 number and they do the plane, room, car reservations. They'll deal with RCI to do the exchange for us. etc.

The price was $25,000 with 10% down and we could get our own financing which I would expect to be around 8% (haven't really looked yet). We were looking at about $1,050 in yearly HOA (I forget what that stands for) costs. All in all, I believe we were looking at around $350 or so per month to buy into this thing.

Where this really appealed to me is I married into a family which formed a corporation eons ago to buy a beachfront property in Akumal Mexico. My wife's mother gave us one week to use the house and the times are fairly flexible. The house is utterly fantastic and the location so close to Cozumel and Cancun is unreal. I'm guessing that I've been spoiled beyond belief with this arrangement (it costs us nothing). Well, heck, see the pics for yourself.

    http://www.pcwize.com/galleries/mexico_06.php
    http://www.pcwize.com/galleries/mexico_07.php

Of course the only downside (if you can call it one) is that it's our only location. Granted, we could trade with someone on a one-on-one basis (our week at the house for a week of theirs somewhere else), but we've never done it.

I would ultimately like to have some more flexibility. We're not giving up our week in Akumal as her mother has given us that forever, but I'd like something of our own which we could use to go other places too.

At any rate, I kind of got off on a tangent there, what really appealed to me is that we could buy/rent points through Shell to pay for airfare which they said would run us about $460 per person for the plane tickets. This is about $300 to $350ish less than we normally pay for airfare there.

Obviously, it's a no brainer that paying $350ish per month for Shell timeshares just to reap the lower airfare to our house in Akumal isn't worth it, but it gives use the 4,550 points to use for vacations elsewhere when we want to go.

Just in the short time I've been reading this forum, I believe the ultimate answer I've gleaned is to never buy from the "dealer" and to buy it from someone who wants to sell their TS. I'm not looking for a long-term investment in the sense that I want to sell it later and make boatloads of money. I'm blond, but I'm not that dumb. I'm looking for a TS solution that isn't all that expensive, and gives us options to go anywhere in the world for a week or two every few years. It's something that I would like to keep for a very long time and either give to the kids, or buy them in (if that's possible) so that they get to use the TS for their needs.

Sorry for the long post. Unfortunately, verbosity is a failing of mine.

Looking forward to getting to know you all. I think I hear a Mai-Tai calling my name so I'm going to end this. If it would only stop raining long enough to go hang out at the beach. If you've ever heard Kauai is rainy in the Dec - Jan timeframe, better believe it. Especially near Princeville! <grin>

Resale prices are 10-50% of developer pricing for the same product (in all but a few cases).

        jericap,

As clarification to a blonde guy, by buying these types of listings through e-bay, I'd be buying essentially the same thing I was offered (plus or minus the extra points and amount of cost)? i.e. If I bought this listing:

        (0) $875.00
        See description Dec-18 19:00
10,800 SHELL VACATION CLUB POINTS, ARIZONA, TIMESHARE
Gold Crown & 5 Star, HAWAII, CALIFORNIA, VEGAS!

Would I be buying the deed they have and be getting the 10,800 points each year, or is this like a one-time buy and once the 10,800 points are gone, so is the, errr, membership in the Shell Club? I understand if it's the former that there would be the HOA costs, so it wouldn't be a one time cost and I just get 10,800 points each year forever.

I guess what I'm asking, is would buying this be like buying a pre-paid phone card with 10,800 minutes.

        Thank you.

Now you see why they don't want you to go home and "think" about it. Many people will research and find out they can get into timesharing a lot cheaper than buying from the developer.

You must keep in mind that most developers will put restrictions on resale purchases. You essentially get the title/deed to the week you purchase but can't use the club benefits. I'd expect that you'll lose thing like the mini-vacations. However, keep in mind that these "extras" sometimes are so great once you start learning the system. Phrases like "on a space available basis" set off red flags in my mind.

As for Shell "doing all you work for you".......that's not necessarily a good thing. I'd rather be able to search for myself and make my own arrangements online when it's convenient for me. Not during their business hours and not having them tell me what's available. Our HGVC ownership is like this and I find it a pain in the backsides to have to call them and let them tell me resort by resort what's available if I want to exchange. I rarely find their "normal business hours" compatible with when I have time to call.

IMO, pass on this deal for now, keep reading, researching and learning. Don't just learn about Shell but learn about all the other timeshares and timeshare systems out there. I never believe in time limits or "one time only offers." There's enough on the table that you usually can get the same offer no matter when you go back to them. If worse comes to worse and they try to say no I'd ask them if they're in the sales business or the sales prevention business. You have plenty of time to think about this deal and not just until Jan. 2nd.

Although there are some one time use of points for sale, what you're seeing is an ownership. If you like the shell program it can be had for a lot less than retail. I went to a presentation on Hawaii/Kona last summer talked about here.
... not enough time for all the timeshares ®

here's what the ad stated for that one:

              First available use 2008
There are 8,300 points that are available for 2008 use year. We will pay the first quarter of maintenance fees ($483, Jan-March) due to the amount of points available. The new owner will be responsible for maintenance fees beginning April 2008.

This Annual Membership is part of the SHELL VACATIONS CLUB and so brings on 10,800 exchangeable CLUB POINTS. The Shell Vacations Club has multiple locations which are listed below. Most of their resorts are either Five Star with Interval International or Gold Crown with RCI. The Home Club for these points are establised in Arizona, meaning you will have up to 12 months to make a reservation to Arizona Resorts and 10 months out for any other resort. Per Shell, there is not a home resort just a home club.

All fees are current with mortgage paid in full. Annual Maintenance fees and club dues are $1930 (which include your RCI and Shell membership, a huge savings). Points are deposited annually on January 1.

I am not familiar with Shell vacation club, I just wanted to illustrate that you could buy cheaper. I bought a Melia vacation club once from a developer and then picked up an exact duplicate to what I bought for 10% of what I paid from the developer.

Look around, if you are still not satisfied, the deal will always be there.

Where the heck did you find that one. I've been searching ebay like nuts just trying to find it for reference. Not looking to jump right on it, but wanted it as a starting point as comparison to the ones I am finding, and why there is such a huge discrepancy between similar prices for much less points.

Thanks again everyone. I see there is a point system going here. I'll figure out how to use it and award points if I can. If anyone has any Dodge Truck related questions. Be happy to answer those in return favor! <grin>

Ahhhh. Ok. This makes more sense. That one sold for $5,400. I couldn't figure out how $875.00 was the price for it.

I'll keep reading and searching ebay and looking into other TS plans. Thank you.
