A little more than $3million for a 30 second spot.. Not including design and production costs for the commercial itself..

It'll be very interesting to see if the expense ends up being justified...

I'm guessing they'll have a big upfront fee.

This is an advertising only site, they don't tell you what you can get for your rental nor give that advice.

The post was more to point up the fact that this advertising venue was spending big bucks to increase traffic which probably means they already are making big bucks to have the kind of funding to pay for that kind of ad.

          Bringing Back The Griswolds

          more info on ad campaign
HomeAway, with Chevy Chase as Clark & Beverly D'Angelo as Ellen, is...

          Bringing Back The Griswolds,
the most iconic American family, for our 2010 marketing campaign.

The HomeAway ad campaign will recapture the spirit of the 1980s comedy classic, "National Lampoon's Vacation," highlighting the travel mishaps that always follow the Griswold family, while also promoting the value of vacation rentals as an alternative to hotels.

Join HomeAway and the Griswolds in the "Wagon Queen Family Truckster" on our "quest for fun" as the Truckster collides its way through the 2010 HomeAway marketing campaign, starting with the TV ad debut during Super Bowl XLIV.

I was really interested in seeing the placement for this one..

It was a cute ad, but I doubt the average watcher really understood what the company does.. I have to wonder if it will end up drawing many new clients, or will just turn out to be a closing tool to sell ads to prospects already in their database..

30 seconds just isn't much time....

That was the biggest waste of money I have ever seen in this industry. I doubt they even got many people going to their website.

More than $2M down the drain. Ouch.

I was not aware of the company before and after seeing the ad did check out the web site. Maybe not worth the cash just for lil ol me, but maybe a few more noticed it too.

I recognized the name when it came on TV because of this post a few months ago. I agree, a lot of people had not a clue what they were referring to. Now that you all have referred to it again I will spend some time to check it out. Thank you.

I thought I watched all of them but don't remember this one. Don't know if it was funny or not so maybe it just didn't register with me.

HomeAway ad during Super Bowl big success! (according to them)

Great news! The numbers are in and our ad that aired during the Super Bowl was ground breaking:

The HomeAway ad generated over 4 million incremental page views on HomeAway.com in the 24 hours following the airing of the ad
On top of that HomeAway received over 1 million visits immediately following the airing of the ad
Unique visitors to HomeAway were up over 500% with 85% of this new customers, the day after the Super Bowl

All this translates into an increased awareness of vacation rentals as an alternative to hotels for travelers and ultimately more visibility and inquiries for you, the homeowner.

The Super Bowl was just the beginning! In the coming months you will continue to see our presence online and via television partnering with media like Google, Yahoo!, Travel+Leisure Travelocity and national cable networks including HGTV, Travel Channel, Food Network, TBS and USA.

Have a hotel horror story of your own? From cramped quarters, outrageous bills or in need of a kitchen, we want to hear them all. Share your story and you could win a dream vacation of your own!

I havent used homeaway, but they own vrbo, which i have used, and for me (I own and rent out multiple ski weeks at mountainside in park city) i have had far more traffic/inquiries/ rentals from vrbo than from any of the timeshare specific cites. though the price to list is really only justified if you have multiple high end weeks to list.
