(This resort is often confused with Banff Rocky Mountain Resort. BRMR is inside Banff National Park while BGMR is located outside the east gate of Banff National Park. The address of BGMR says that it is in "Dead Man's Flats" but our GPS only located the resort when I entered Canmore instead of Dead Man's Flats. So it's probably located along the boundary of the 2 towns.)
We just spent a week at Banff Gate Mountain Resort. It coincided with the last weekend of the Calgary Stampede so it gave us an opportunity to attend the event.
We stayed in Chalet 11 which meant we had a great view of a mountain (not sure of the name). It was directly in front of our living room so we looked at it in awe as it looked different at different times of the day, when it was sunny or raining or with a light dusting of snow. The fickle weather made the view and our experiences interesting.
The master bedroom located upstairs had a king bed, a dresser, 2 night tables and a flat screen TV. There was a ceiling fan and a screened window that opened. There was no air conditioning. There was an ensuite that consisted of a sink, toilet and a Jacuzzi tub. On the main floor, there was a living room, dining room/full kitchen and a glass door that opened to a balcony/patio with a table for 6 and a gas barbeque. The living room had a gas fireplace, vaulted ceilings and a ceiling fan. Also on the main floor, there was another bathroom (sink, toilet, shower/tub) and another bedroom (2 single beds). The sofa looked like it would open into a double-sized bed and there was a sign that said there was a murphy bed in the big entrance foyer. We did not need to use either one but I would be uncomfortable sleeping in the entrance foyer. We used the entrance foyer for our coats and shoes. This room would be great in the winter for skiing equipment.
The main building contained the check-in counter, a large seating area inside and outside and a big games room downstairs. There was also a building with the pool and hot tub. The laundry was located in another building.
I read somewhere that they have park passes that guests could borrow so we decided to give it a try. They actually have 2 passes but they were both out for the day. They let us reserve a pass for 2 days for the later part of the week though so it worked out great.
Overall, I was pleased with the resort because its location allowed us to see the countless attractions in the area. It is a short drive to Canmore where we could get our groceries and go out for dinner. We were able to go up the Banff gondola and visit the Cave and Basin Historical Site. The discovery of the latter started Canada's National Parks system in 1885 so it was very interesting. We also visited Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. There were many other things to see and do, more than we could fit in a week. My research indicated that the resort was not managed well in the past and then it was damaged by the big flood in 2013 so I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of the resort. It wasn't a Marriott but it was suitable to the area, i.e. "natural" = "rustic". It will only get better as they recover from the flood damage. If I have an opportunity to come back to this area, I would consider the Banff Gate Mountain Resort again.
